Finestre Sull’Arte ’s appointment with auctions from Italian houses is back: so here are the most interesting events from November 25, 2018 through the end of the year.
We begin on Tuesday, November 27, with Minerva Auctions’ Old Paintings and 19th-century Art auction: highlights include an Old Mare and Her Stableman by Théodore Géricault (Rouen, 1791 - Paris, 1824), estimated between 80 and 120,000 euros, with auction base 80,000 euros; a Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Giampietrino (Milan, 1508 - 1549), estimated 70-100.000 euros and base 70,000, a San Giovannino in a landscape by Camillo Procaccini (Parma, 1561 - Milan, 1629), which goes to auction with base 60,000 and estimate 60-80,000 euros, and a fine work by Jacopo Vignali (Pratovecchio, 1592 - Florence, 1664), The Ass of Balaam, with estimate 30-50,000 euros and base 22,000. Affordable bargains include a Marina with Reefs by a follower of Salvator Rosa, at auction with a base of 200 euros, a small bronze by Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, 1852 - 1929), titled Carmela, at auction at 500 euros (estimate 500-800), a drawing by Simone Cantarini (Pesato, 1612 - Verona, 1648) depicting the Circumcision of Jesus at auction at 700 euros (estimate 700-1.000) and, also by the Marche artist, a Study for the Birth of the Virgin, with the same prices.
On Nov. 28 and 29, jewelry aficionados should not miss the Gioielli da Pandolfini auction: among the most prized lots are a platinum ring with an octagonal-cut diamond (estimated between 400 and 600,000 euros), a platinum ring with sapphire and diamonds valued between 50 and 80,000 euros, and a yellow gold and diamond necklace that belonged to Cristina Ruspoli Bonaparte, wife of Napoleon Charles Bonaparte, estimated between 45 and 50,000 euros. On Nov. 30, however, appointment at Farsetti ’s with the Contemporary Art auction: highlights include a 1973 Surface by Enrico Castellani (Castelmassa, 1930 - Rome, 2017) with estimate 250-300,000 euros, an untitled oil on panel by Gino De Dominicis (Ancona, 1947 - Rome, 1998), estimated between 120 and 180.000 euros (and also by De Dominicis there will also be an Inverted Perspective with an estimate 90-140,000 euros), and a Personaggio by Enrico Baj (Milan, 1924 - Vergiate, 2003) estimated between 40 and 60,000 euros. Among the cheaper offerings are an oil on canvas by Renato Birolli (Verona, 1905 - Milan, 1959) depicting a Seated Woman and estimated at 300-500 euros, a charcoal drawing on paper by Ottone Rosai (Florence, 1895 - Ivrea, 1957) depicting Via de’ Massoni (estimated at 400-700 euros), and an oil on canvas by Ernesto Treccani (Milan, 1920 - 2009), titled Alla fermata (At a Stop ) and valued between 600 and 1,000 euros. Also at Farsetti’s, on Saturday, December 1, appointment with the Modern Art auction: starting with works with estimates above 2,000 euros, such as a Landscape with Mountains by Mario Sironi (Sassari, 1885 - Milan, 1961) and a composition of Flowers by Ennio Morlotti (Lecco, 1910 - Milan, 1992), works both with estimates 2,500-3.000 euros, to a Spatial Concept by Lucio Fontana (Rosario, 1899 - Comabbio, 1968) with an estimate 400-500,000 euros, and an unusual pastel work on jute by Paul Klee (Münchenbuchsee, 1879 - Muralto, 1940), titled Drinnen und draussen (“Inside and Out”) and estimated between 350 and 500,000 euros. Also at auction are works by De Chirico, Modigliani, Léger, Musič, Depero, Marini, and Matta.
Also on Saturday, Dec. 1, Blindarte is offering the auction Old Drawings and Paintings, Sculptures and Paintings 19th-20th Century: to be followed by a portrait of a woman by Giuseppe De Nittis (Barletta, 1846 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1884), estimate 500-700 euros, and with the same valuation a male portrait by Vincenzo Gemito. Also at auction is a Magdalene in meditation by Massimo Stanzione (Frattamaggiore, 1585 - Naples, 1656), with a valuation of 40-60,000 euros.
Contemporary art also takes center stage at Cambi on Tuesday, December 4, with the Modern and Contemporary Art auction. Over two hundred lots, all with low valuations: the most expensive works are a Minotaur by Alberto Savinio (Athens, 1891 - Rome, 1952), valued between 4,000 and 6,000 euros, and a work by Emilio Tadini (Milan, 1927 - 2002), Luce, valued between 4 and 5,000 euros. Finally, on December 5, the Modern and Contemporary Art auction will be held at Finarte. Among the main lots are a mixed media sculpture by Salvatore Scarpitta (New York, 1919 - 2007), Shut (€200-240,000 estimate), a White Surface by Castellani (€160-180,000), an oil on canvas by Carlo Carrà (Quargnento, 1881 - Milan, 1966), Vela a Venezia (€40-50,000) and a drawing by Giacomo Balla (Turin, 1871 - Rome, 1958), Elisa and Luce sul balcone (€40-50,000). There is no shortage of proposals for everyone, including works by great artists: for example, a watercolor by Giuseppe Migneco (Messina, 1903 - Milan, 1997), Woman with Guitar (300-500 euros), an untitled drawing by Arnaldo Pomodoro (Morciano di Romagna, 1926), estimated between 500 and 600 euros, and an untitled mixed media work by Agenore Fabbri (Quarrata, 1911 - Savona, 1998), valued at 1,000-1,500 euros.
