A conference on mass tourism and heritage conservation is scheduled at the Vatican Museums on Friday, October 12, 2018.

On Friday, October 12, 2018, a conference will be held at the Vatican Museums focusing on the management of mass tourism and preventive conservation of the cultural heritage of museums, entitled Preventive Conservation in Large Museums. Comparing Strategies. “The Vatican Museums are pleased to host the directors of the great universal museums, attended by millions of visitors each year. Their daily challenge: to find new ways of managing and materially preserving such an important and highly exposed heritage. I hope that this conference, by promoting a real and direct confrontation, will contribute to the elaboration of common strategies that can be a concrete help for all museums”: this is how Barbara Jatta, director of the Vatican Museums, introduces the event in which the directors of museums from all over the world will participate.

RepresentingItaly will be Professor Salvatore Settis, Professor Antonio Paolucci (the latter was Jatta’s predecessor), and Christian Greco, director of the Egyptian Museum in Turin. The other participants are: Jean-Luc Martinez, director of the Louvre; Gabriele Finaldi of the National Gallery in London; Mikhail B. Piotrovskiy of theHermitage in St. Petersburg; and Timothy Potts of the GettyMuseum in Los Angeles. Also present will be the directors of the Prado in Madrid and the Museum of Versailles.

Participants at the meeting will describe operational strategies or specific cases they have faced in the context of their roles, and from the comparison of the various instances and situations, similarities and differences, critical issues and opportunities will emerge-a web of observation points and concrete activities, useful in defining what could become the future guidelines for museum institutions.
