On March 15, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., the Capitoline Museums will offer an itinerary called Love and Psyche: a timeless fable, part of the Museums to Touch initiative. The itinerary will begin at the fascinating sculptural group of the young Cupid and Psyche, a copy of a famous Hellenistic sculpture made at the end of the second century AD, which will serve as an introduction to Apuleius ’ fortunate fable about the beauty of Psyche, her secret love with Eros, the jealousy and punishment of Venus and the happy ending with the protagonists’ reception among the gods of Heaven. In particular, it will be an opportunity to learn about the winged Psyche already chosen by the banker Agostino Chigi to adorn his Villa Farnesina, who seems to protect herself from Venus with a desperate expression; to appreciate the different representations oflove and desire, through the celebrated statues of the Capitoline and Esquiline Venus (well understood thanks to a scale model) and the dynamic Eros stringing the bow, a copy of the celebrated original by Lysippus that came to the Capitolini in the mid-18th century from Villla d’Este.
For admission (reservations required) you can call 060608 (daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.).
