ART CITY Bologna, five special projects to celebrate Giorgio Morandi on the 60th anniversary of his death

The twelfth edition of ART CITY Bologna, promoted by the Municipality of Bologna and BolognaFiere and directed for the seventh year by Lorenzo Balbi, director of MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna (Museum of Modern Art of Bologna), is scheduledfrom February 1 to 4, 2024. The event will accompany Arte Fiera, which reaches its 50th edition this year. And to celebrate an important anniversary, ART CITY Bologna has chosen this year to pay homage to Giorgio Morandi, on the 60th anniversary of his death, by offering a program inspired by him.

Five special projects will explore and reinterpret Morandi’s work through different contemporary languages: that of performance will be entrusted to Virgilio Sieni, who will stage in the stalls of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna the new production Elegia Luminosa and lead Atelier Morandi - Palestra Auratica, a series of lessons on gesture; that of photography will be represented by Joel Meyerowitz ’s shots exhibited within the Collezioni Comunali d’Arte, at Palazzo d’Accursio, in Morandi’s objects - the photographs of Joel Meyerowitz, and by the works of Mary Ellen Bartley in the exhibition Mary Ellen Bartley: MORANDI’S BOOKS at the Morandi Museum; that of video will be expressed by artist Tacita Dean with STILL LIFE. The studio of Giorgio Morandi, inside the new PIETRO space; finally, that of sound will feature Mark Vernon’s sound and live installation Saturnine Orbit, conceived by Xing for the Casa Museo Giorgio Morandi and Fienili del Campiaro in Grizzana Morandi, in the province of Bologna.

Accompanying the five special projects is the exhibition focus Morandi metaphysical. Three Drawings, One Story, which will present three drawings at Casa Morandi.

Also confirmed for this edition of ART CITY Bologna is the white night of art, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, an occasion when the public can also visit in the evening hours, until midnight, the many artistic proposals spread throughout the city.

As usual, thanks to the participation of numerous public and private institutions, art galleries and independent spaces, the city will be animated during the days of ART CITY Bologna by a widespread and varied programming with the intention of involving heterogeneous audiences. With a view to encouraging the widest possible accessibility by the public, free or subsidized admission to events remains confirmed in this edition of ART CITY Bologna.
