Opening to the public from August 24 to September 8, 2024, is the 62nd edition of the Cortonantiquaria antiques exhibition at the Sant’Agostino Convention Center in Arezzo. Promoted by the Municipality of Cortona and Cortona Sviluppo with the artistic direction of Furio Velona, the exhibition is supported by the Chamber of Commerce, Banca Popolare di Cortona, Bonifiche Ferraresi, Studio Iureconsulti, with the collaboration of Furio Velona Antiques. Eighteen exhibitors are present, from Italy and Spain. Among the works on display, canvases and panels, sculptures, and tapestries, several objects stand out, including a St. John the Baptist from the late 15th century, as well as an excellently preserved oil on canvas bearing a 16th-century Ecce Homo; a Nativity with Adoration of the Shepherds from the late 17th century; and a polychrome wooden St. Roch from the early 16th century. In the side events, an exhibition inside the St. Augustine presentsFuturist aeropainting, while on Sept. 1 Piazza Signorelli is the scene of the Panariello VS Masini show, in which the cabaret performer and the musician challenge each other in jokes and musical pieces. Like every year, one evening is dedicated instead to the Cortonantiquaria Prize.
“The flagship of summer initiatives in Cortona,” says Cortona Mayor Luciano Meoni, “L’Antiquaria brings to the city the best expressions of the creativity of a past that never stops being contemporary in a place like this, where the dialogue between past and present is a natural vocation. Cortona reconfirms itself as the city that can channel into itself not only passionate tourism but also a flow of visitors interested in precisely that artistic creativity that we are happy to continue to promote.”
“The offer of our Antiquaria is composed of many elements. Sacred subjects and secular subjects, testimonies of painting, sculpture, furniture and high-level objects, bring us closer to a very distant past, which thanks to this historic exhibition is here at hand for those who are looking for it and for those who can appreciate it. To create culture is also to create reflections-and admiration-of the talent of painters, carvers, weavers and artists from centuries ago,” stresses Francesco Attesti, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Cortona.
“In the contemporary home there is a growing trend to include antique objects that embellish the context and create a dialogue between distant times. At Cortonantiquaria this year we find works made even in the 15th century, but also objects from the 19th century not necessarily for millionaire’s pockets, capable of transforming the home into an interesting environment and - why not - also marked by that cultured taste that modern architects so appreciate,” comments Furio Velona, artistic director of Cortonantiquaria.
Fabio Procacci, director of Cortona Sviluppo, adds, “In recent years we have wanted to associate the antiques fair with exhibitions on the twentieth century, as again this year with the exhibition on Futurist aeropainting. If Cortona is home to great old masters like Signorelli and Berrettini, it is certainly also home to modern art with Gino Severini. We pay homage to this dual soul with the collateral exhibition.”
