All of Umbria's schedule of events for summer 2024

Summer in Umbria is loaded with events including festivals, historical re-enactments and exhibitions. Here's the full schedule.

On the occasion of the retrospective exhibition Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) curated by Giovanni Agosti that can be visited until May 22 to Jan. 25, 2025 in Milan’s Triennale, the Region of Umbria’s Tourism Department and the Chamber of Commerce of Umbria recounted the link between the architect-designer andUmbria and presented the region’s summer tourism offerings, with a calendar full of events and appointments to welcome all kinds of travelers: the Festival of the Two Worlds, in Spoleto, from June 28 to July 14; Umbria Jazz, in Perugia, from July 12 to 21, which then comes to Terni as well, in September with the “Weekend” edition-the Festival of Nations, in Città di Castello, from Aug. 26 to Sept. 6; and the Trasimeno Music Festival, in Magione, from June 27 to July 3. And for music, there are so many events, among the main ones: the “Umbria that rocks,” in the historic center of Perugia, July 3 to 7; the “Orvieto Sound Festival,” in the town of the same name, July 25 to 28; and “Suoni Controvento,” a performing arts festival of the highest level, located between the Rocca Maggiore in Assisi, Corciano, Norcia and Gualdo Tadino, in the first decade of August. But summer is also a time to rediscover traditions. Foligno’s Giostra della Quintana is one example, a historical reenactment that can be visited from June 14 to Sept. 14, and the jousting on June 15 and Sept. 15, a competition among the 10 districts to vie for the palio.

In Bevagna, on the other hand, there is the Mercato delle Gaite. The entire village is immersed in the Middle Ages and ancient crafts, the result of a careful historiographical analysis. The appointment is from June 19 to 30. In Spello, on the day of Corpus Christi, June 1 and 2, the most spectacular of the many Infiorate that take place in Umbria, recognized for quality and appreciated worldwide, is staged. And from Aug. 5 to 11 in Nocera Umbria is the scene of the Palio dei quartieri, to go back in time. The city is divided in two: the Porta Santa Croce neighborhood will re-enact the 19th century, while the Borgo San Martino neighborhood will be transformed into a medieval town. For this edition, the theme chosen is “outdoor life, folk festivals and markets.” But the Middle Ages, which characterize the prevailing image of Umbrian towns, are discussed during the festival held in Gubbio Sept. 25-29. Film enthusiasts can go to Montone where the Umbria Film Festival will be held from July 10 to ’14, to Narni from July 31 to Aug. 5, or to Perugia from Sept. 27 to Oct. 8; while in Todi, from Sept. 13 to 15, there will be the new edition of “Umbria Cinema,” a festival that its artistic director Paolo Genovese calls “Pop.” Then, from September to November, for five weekends, “Sentieri e Sapori del Cinema” is born: Umbrian wineries and oil mills come alive with film screenings and tastings of the region’s excellent wine and oil products under the artistic direction of the Network of Umbrian Film Festivals. This is a project that aims at the seasonal adjustment and promotion of food, wine and oil productions and the promotion of places other than the most common traditional tourist routes.

In the field of art, the National Gallery of Umbria plays a key role. The program for 2024 is full of events: on June 15, fourteen state cultural places in Umbria will be the protagonists of "The Thin Line of Umbria." This is a widespread exhibition in which national institutes will collaborate with ten museums included in the regional circuit and other local entities for a dialogue with contemporary art. Other events include an exhibition on Klimt, "The Three Ages," from June 29 to Sept. 15. At the National Gallery of Umbria comes the Austrian painter’s masterpiece directly from GNAM in Rome. From Oct. 12, 2024, to Jan. 19, 2025, “Not Everything is Gold...,” curated by Alessandra Mammì, Veruska Picchiarelli and Carla Scagliosi, will enrich the Sala Podiani with some of the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria’s gilded masterpieces in dialogue with works by great masters of contemporary art. In Todi, from Aug. 24, on the occasion of the thirty-seventh edition of Todi Festival, Mark di Suvero ’s creative contribution is expected with a solo exhibition in the Sala delle Pietre del Palazzo del Popolo entitled “Space Time”; a series of recent and intriguing paintings made with fluorescent paints, which refer to his energetic and enveloping sculptural spaces that are always open to unpredictable readings and disposed to confrontation with the outside world. In Città di Castello until Sept. 30, on the other hand, the exhibition “BURRI: Tempere 1947-1990” can be visited at the Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco to celebrate the anniversary of the Maestro’s birth. The exhibition event presents more than one hundred works, of small and medium format, drawings and graphic works, created during his 40-year production. Contemporary art also in Assisi where until Oct. 6 at the Rocca Maggiore is the exhibition “Listening to the Flight of Birds” by Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa, produced by Opera Laboratori in collaboration with Galleria Continua. Finally, not to be missed in Perugia from Sept. 25 to 28 is "Seed,“ an international festival dedicated to architecture, design, urban planning and the changes sweeping through our cities and territories organized by the Guglielmo Giordano Foundation and the National Institute of Architecture. In a period characterized by social, economic, ecological and technological imbalances and because of a general political instability, the theme chosen for the 4th edition of the event invites guests to confront the infinite possible ”Balances" that each one seeks in its own field to respond to sometimes conflicting needs and interests.
