Opening next July 10 in Udine, at the Cathedral Museum-Cathedral of Udine, the exhibition A Saint Blaise of the Friulian Renaissance. History, Devotion and Restoration of a Wooden Sculpture, which will show the public a wooden blessing Saint Blaise, dating back to the late 15th century, which for nearly a hundred years has been kept in the entrance hall of the Cathedral (but came from the church of Santa Maria del Castello): having undergone restoration, the work will be placed right in the Cathedral Museum-Cathedral of Udine.
The sculpture, from the Friulian school (formerly attributed to Domenico da Tolmezzo), was restored with the contribution of the Petraz family, founder and owner of Studio GLP in Udine (an intellectual property firm celebrating its 50th year in 2017): it depicts the saint, whose devotion was particularly widespread in Friuli, in typical bishop’s robes and in the act of blessing. On July 10, at 6 p.m., there will be a presentation of the sculpture’s restoration (also at the Cathedral Museum-Cathedral of Udine), curated by Maria Beatrice Bertone. Present will be Elisabetta Francescutti, an official of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Superintendence for Artistic, Archaeological and Landscape Heritage, restorer Silvia van den Heuel, Archbishop Andrea Bruno Mazzocato, Archpriest of Santa Maria Annunziata in Udine (who organized the event) Luciano Nobile, and the vicar general of the Archdiocese of Udine, Guido Genero.
“This restoration,” reads the presentation, “is a significant step in the history of sculpture in Friuli in a panorama of studies, research and restoration that aim to clarify the activity of the artists and ancient workshops that made the altars of churches shine, becoming a point of reference for an artistic language reflected over the centuries.”
The exhibition can be visited during the Museum’s opening hours (Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.), and guided tours are also provided.
