From April 10-18, 2022, the short film The Last Supper. The living tableau by director and creator Armondo Linus Acosta, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’sLast Supper. The project features the collaboration of three masters of cinematography: cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, set designer Dante Ferretti and set decorator Francesca Lo Schiavo.

In the nine-minute short film, the painting comes to life. Slowly the apostles are revealed, seated at the table, with Jesus in the center, in the act of blessing the bread and wine, as he announces the betrayal by one of them. Great attention has been given to every detail, faithfully reconstructed. All the details of the play are thus enhanced. None of the actors involved are professionals: they are technicians who worked on the set and were noticed by Armondo Linus Acosta for their resemblance to the characters depicted by Leonardo. The director himself impersonates the apostle Thaddeus. Supporting plaster casts were created for the costumes so that the actors could more easily maintain the positions depicted by Leonardo.

“The premise of believing in God is an ancient and eternal human reality,” said Linus Acosta. “To be able to project the quality of this meaning in a place that is primordial and goes back to when the world was created by God is absolute harmony. I sensed that when I entered the Caves. You can just feel that it is the right place to show it. And the end result is that people of our time can experience a primordial feeling and a primordial sense of God in a very divine place.” The meaning of the work becomes even more powerful today in light of the current conflict. The message of this painting is a call to universal prayer. “Everyone is praying for peace,” Acosta explains, “everyone is praying for this war to end or not to really start. So prayer is not solely a Catholic activity. It doesn’t matter who we pray to. It matters to do it together.”

“Let’s go inside the picture, inside the soul of the apostles and witness the miracle of Jesus,” added Francesca Lo Schiavo. “I believe that this affects the whole world. I was very touched by the idea of participating in this operation.” Also enthusiastic about the project is Dante Ferretti: “It all started when Armondo called me in Rome and proposed to reconstruct Leonardo’s Last Supper,” he explained. “We had to make the painting come alive, with real characters, moving. It sounded very interesting to me and I immediately said yes.”

On the occasion of Good Friday, from April 15 the Tableau vivant will also be projected on the dome inside the Valadier Temple.
