On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Laura Battiferri, wife of architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati, who was close to the Medici court and in particular to Duchess Eleonora of Toledo, the Florence Office for World Heritage and Relations with UNESCO of the City of Florence and MUS.E, in collaboration with theUniversity of Florence, present a program of initiatives aimed at the general public and scholars.
It starts on Saturday, September 23, at 5 p.m. in the church of San Giovannino degli Scolopi, where both Laura Battiferri and Bartolomeo Ammannati rest with the sealing of Alessandro Allori’s painting. This space will host a tribute to Laura Battiferri, author of many poetic compositions and member of the most relevant academic circles, including the Sienese Accademia degli Intronati, with the interpretation of some of her poems (by Giaele Monaci, MUS.E), anticipated by a brief presentation of the historical figure by Eleonora Faricelli, interspersed with brief musical interventions. Participation in the event is free of charge, subject to availability of seats in the church.
It will continue on Sunday, Oct. 1, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3 with a literary and artistic performance in front of the portrait Agnolo Bronzino made of her, displayed inside the Museum of Palazzo Vecchio (part of the donation made to the City of Florence by collector and scholar Charles Alexander Loeser in the 1920s). The celebrations will finally culminate with a study day centered on the figure of Battiferri, a high female example of the exercise of intellect and poetry, on December 1 at the Marucelliana Library.
