The archaeological site of Pompeii gets a new lighting system: visitors, starting Saturday, July 8, will be able to walk through the area at night as well, thanks to the initiative A Night in Pompeii. A special route has been devised that, starting from Porta Marina, passes through the Suburban Baths, the Domus of Triptolemus, the sanctuary of Apollo, the Capitolium, and ends at the Basilica, which at night will become the setting for three-dimensional projections that will give new life to the city. Sound effects have also been devised along the entire route (artisans’ activities, the shouts of the market, the sacred music of religious ceremonies, the chattering of houses) to make it seem as if the visitor is really in the Roman city.
“The revival of Pompeii is crucial for the country’s international image.” This was stated by Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini after the inauguration of the new lighting system: “another important step,” the minister said, “of the rebirth of a unique archaeological site in the world, a path that in three years has allowed 30 domus to be returned to the public, the entire archaeological area to be equipped with Wi-Fi coverage, and a three-kilometer itinerary to be created that allows full accessibility to a relevant part of the excavations. Thanks to the striking play of light, the lines and shapes of the ruins now shine with renewed beauty.”
Night tours will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from July 8 to August 24 (plus a special opening on Saturday, July 8), then on July 8, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27 and August 1, 3, 8, 10, 17, 22 and 24. Times: starting at 9 p.m., in groups of 50 to 60 people maximum. The visit, which includes an educational accompaniment lasts an hour and a quarter and costs 11 euros. Reservations recommended at 800600601 (from landlines) and 08119737256 (from mobile and abroad).
