A multimedia immersion among the works of Caravaggio at Castello Ursino

Until March 31, 2020, Castello Ursino in Catania will host the multimedia project Caravaggio immersive.

Catania ’s Museo Civico Castello Ursino welcomes until March 31, 2020, the multimedia project entitled Caravaggio immersive, which aims to recount the last years of Michelangelo Merisi’s life. Using immersive projections and digital reconstructions, the event will retraceCaravaggio’s experience in Sicily while fleeing Malta and his Sicilian paintings.

The project, produced by Italia Museo with the collaboration of the City of Catania and the artistic direction of Roberto Pantè, will also be an opportunity to host the Stanza dei Tesori, where important works by fourteen Caravaggio artists, including Mattia Preti, Pietro Novelli, Jusepe De Ribera, Matthias Stomer and Mario Minniti, will be on view.

Through new technologies, viewers will better understand the artist’s tormented journey and the reflection of it in his works; this will be complemented by lighting cuts, original soundtracks, and scripted voiceovers to give the project an almost cinematic feel.
In this way various themes will be addressed, such as Caravaggio as director ante litteram, street people as the painter’s inspiration, the experience among the streets of 17th-century Rome, condemnation and exile, the violence depicted in his works, and the Sicilian experience.

A maxi screen will show a video narrating the artist’s personal events; in addition, the environment will be enriched by a reproduction of the artist’s workshop, with the tools of the trade and a reproduction of the darkroom with which Caravaggio studied his chiaroscuro.
Narrating his Sicilian experience will be Caravaggio himself, in a hologram, and visitors will discover all the details of the works and stylistic transformations by means of large projections.
Some monitors will then show the artist’s most famous works; next will be the theme of condemnation, which marked Merisi’s life and production.
The visitor will also find himself projected among the waves of the sea, to relive the same feelings of the artist on the journey between Malta and Sicily.

After presenting the stark images of his works, the theme of Caravaggio’s ability to compose the scene like a director will be addressed: in fact, the last area will focus on this distinctive trait, showing the techniques and preliminary studies carried out by the artist. In addition, a 17th-century inn will be reproduced in order to recount the places and faces from which Caravaggio drew inspiration for his characters.

Finally, works by Caravaggio painters such as Mattia Preti’s St. Luke the Painter, Pietro Novelli’s St. John the Baptist and The Samaritan Rescues the Wounded by the same artist, Jusepe De Ribera’s The Prophet, Matthias Stomer’s Death of Seneca, Mario Minniti’s Christ at the Column, and Matthias Stomer’s Christ Mocked will be on display in the Treasures Room.

Hours: Daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets: Full 12 euros, reduced 10 euros for over 65s, reduced 8 euros for students.
