A sixteen-meter-high and twenty-four-meter-longcardboard installation will rise on July 8, 2023 in the farmyard of Cascina Merlata in Milan, thanks to a collective of artists led by artist Olivier Grossetête, known for his temporary monumental installations created in many parts of the world using cardboard boxes and inviting citizens to collaborate to assemble the giant monuments.
Theparticipatory monumental installation Connections, curated by Olivier Grossetête, with Jean-Marie Bergey and Francis Ruggirello, and in collaboration with Gonzalo Bascuñan, Larissa Bergamaschi, Marco Petrone, Gaia Michela Russo, Rebecca Sforzani, and Tommaso Tresso, which involved more four hundred people in co-design and implementation and three Milan neighborhoods (Cascina Merlata/Gallaratese + Redo Merezzate + San Siro), will then be torn down the next day, July 9.
1,500 cardboard boxes and 30 kilometers of adhesive tape to make up this installation that will come to weigh about a ton and will be entirely assembled and hoisted by hand in a true participatory action. In June, citizens who joined the call built the pieces of the work that will be assembled collectively on Saturday, July 8. On July 9, when it will be destroyed by the same people who built it, the cardboard that makes it up will be sustainably disposed of thanks to the participation of Comieco; the destruction will also become an event. The cardboard will be separated from the tape and everything will be recycled.
The event, conceived and promoted by the cultural association LOPLOP with Urban Cultural Sea and Quartiere Digitale and carried out in collaboration with EuroMilano, is part of thewithin the project RECLAIM OUR FUTURE - realized with the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo, Regione Lombardia and with the support of Fondazione Maurizio Fragiacomo - and aims to bring people together in creative process of participatory art, spreading a cultural and artistic experience outside the canonical places and promoting inclusion.
