A busy calendar for children and adults at Florence's Museo Galileo

Florence's Museo Galileo has unveiled a full calendar of events specifically designed for children and adults, starting Sunday, Nov. 12.

Florence’s Museo Galileo presents a calendar of events in which adults and children ages 10 and up can participate.
There are a total of eight days, the first of which will be held on November 12, in which visitors will be able to discover the traditions and practices of artistic craftsmanship of the past, of which the museum holds a heritage of the highest value from Florentine workshops dating from between the 15th and 19th centuries, and, at the end, they will receive a useful guide so that they can independently repeat the activities carried out.
Here is the very rich program:

Sunday 11 a.m.

Before starting at 10:30 a.m., the museum will offer participants a tasty breakfast provided by Pasticceria Robiglio, thanks to the support of Opera Laboratori Fiorentini.

Drawing with the camera obscura
curated by Gianni Miglietta
The camera obscura was long used by artists to objectively fix reality in their works. In the workshop we trace the experiences of artists such as Vermeer and Canaletto to those of the Impressionists and experiment with the relationship between the camera obscura, drawing and the advent of photography, which so influenced the birth of art movements between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Great-grandfather’s portrait. Wet collodion photography
by the Photonomy Association
As in an old photographic studio, wet collodion photography is concretely produced in the workshop, following the technique established between the 1850s and 1880s. All processing steps are replicated, from shooting to developing, from fixing the plate to finishing.

The precious robe of telescopes. Florentine paper workshop
curated by Carlo Saitta
The workshop is dedicated to the making of papers with marbled patterns, inspired by the covering of some ancient telescopes preserved at the Museo Galileo. With the guidance of an expert Florentine craftsman, it is possible to follow all the steps and create your own small masterpiece.

A Blue World. The cyanotype technique
Edited by Associazione Fotonomia, Marco Berni, Daniela Vespoli
A meeting dedicated to making cyanotype prints, one of the oldest photographic techniques. In the workshop we discover all the steps that lead from the simple sheet of paper to the magic of development, when the image is generated thanks to a chemical process stimulated by light.

Dec. 10, 2017
Glasses for the Stars. Lenses and telescopes in the seventeenth century
Edited by Paolo Del Santo
The years immediately following the invention of the telescope saw the birth of a new figure of craftsman: the maker of lenses for astronomical use. Such lenses, in fact, required higher quality standards than those of common “nose glasses,” which had been in use for several centuries. The workshop will illustrate the techniques used by these specialized artisans, as well as the materials, tools and manufacturing processes of the time.

Dec. 17, 2017
Sundials and sundials. In search of True Time
curated by Stefano Barbolini
This meeting is dedicated to the first instruments for measuring time, based on the observation of the apparent motion of the Sun. The difference between True Time and Civil Time is explained and, with projections and practical demonstrations, the time systems used in different eras are illustrated.

January 14, 2018
Art and science of gilding
curated by Chiara De Felice
The workshop is devoted to the use of gold leaf in Florentine artisan workshops, starting with an illustration of the ancient figure of the battiloro. After a demonstration of different ancient gilding techniques and related tools and materials, there will be a practical test of laying down gold leaf using gouache and mission techniques.

January 21, 2018
Time Machine. Clocks between wheels and springs
curated by Andrea Palmieri
The workshop, taught by an experienced master watchmaker, engages visitors with explanations and demonstrations on a journey of discovery of the clock, its history and refined mechanisms. The activity includes a guided tour of the Galileo Museum’s antique clocks.
