Unsuspected creative: Mattia Morandi, former MiC press office chief, exhibits his works

In Rome, Fabio Mazzeo Architects kicks off a series of exhibitions featuring ... unsuspected creatives: the first is Mattia Morandi, former head of the press and communications office of the Ministry of Culture, who we discover is also an artist. His works are on display from June 4 to 21.

From June 4 to June 21, 2024, in Rome, Fabio Mazzeo Architects is hosting at its headquarters on Via Giulia, inside Palazzo Baldoca Muccioli, the first event in a series of monographic exhibitions entitled Insospettabili Creativi. These exhibitions are dedicated to people who, while not art professionals, feel the need to express themselves creatively. The idea comes from Fabio Mazzeo, founder and creative director of Fabio Mazzeo Architects, with the curatorship of Alessia Vitali, Cultural Curator of FMA. The intent is to highlight the expressive urgency of individuals engaged in other professions, but who find time to explore and manifest a more personal dimension through art.

The first “unsuspected creative” is Mattia Morandi, a communications expert born in 1975 who presents a collection of drawings entitled United Creatures. These kaleidoscopic drawings bring to life imaginary characters with multiple faces, expressing a wide range of personalities, emotions and reactions. The technique used reflects the frenzy of everyday life, with the use of scattered pencils, colors and markers, creating a dreamlike atmosphere and capturing suspended moments. “The technique,” reads the presentation text, “seems to borrow the spirit of an everyday life that is in a hurry, but finds time to use pencils, colors, highlighters scattered like sticks in the game of Shanghai, on the surface of a work desk that sublimates, altered and stressed, into unexpected color mixtures. A dreamlike atmosphere comes to life: these drawings capture suspended moments, as if expressions and physiognomies had been fixed an instant before an impending event. Morandi delivers to us, perhaps, portraits of the many selves that emerge different, but always positive and somewhat brazen in confronting the tourbillon of life.”

Morandi, who describes himself as “Roman, left-handed, monothematic,” is a journalist and communications expert with a multifaceted career that includes roles in cultural institutions (he was for about ten years head of the Press and Communication Office of the Ministry of Culture) and the creation of the Fumetti nei musei series, conceived together with the Coconino publishing house and awarded at Lucca Comics & Games(here is an interview of ours on the subject) in 2018 with the Oscar del Fumetto Italiano for the best publishing initiative of the year. In the past, he also worked at Cinecittà and taught at Iulm in Milan, where he was for some time a lecturer in communication of cultural events. Drawing has always been a constant companion for Morandi, with works arising from improvised sketches during meetings and phone calls, traced quickly on post-it notes, fly sheets, notebooks, and newspaper pages.

The exhibition takes place in a prominent historical context: Palazzo Baldoca Muccioli, located in Rome’s Rione Regola, a Renaissance building designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1570. Since 2015, Fabio Mazzeo Architects has restored and renovated the entire floor of the palace, combining ancient decorations with contemporary elements, creating a dialogue between history and modernity.
