Goldrake has arrived in Maremma. That’s right: as of last August 7, in the hills of Fonteblanda, near Orbetello (Grosseto), in one of Italy’s most beautiful rural areas, there is an arm of Goldrake towering in the landscape. The colossal reproduction of the limb of Ufo Robot, the popular 1970s Toei Animation cartoon based on Go Nagai’s manga, is the work of contemporary artist Moira Ricci, born in 1977 in Orbetello itself (to her credit she has, among other experiences, a participation in the Quadriennale di Roma, in 2016): five meters high, the reproduction of Goldrake’s arm, entitled Totem, is made of iron, fiberglass and other materials and will remain in the Maremma hills, near the San Donato provincial road in the Collecchio area, until September 15.
Installing the work is the Hypermaremma association, which is active in promoting contemporary art with its art festival of the same name. “Conceived as a real monument-simulacrum to evoke the hero that marked his childhood,” the association explains, “in this case the cartoon character from superhero becomes the transfiguration of the savior, an ultra-earthly entity devoted to protect the earth and humankind from dark threats. For the artist, in fact, salvation will come from the sky, that sky that for the rural tradition of the hinterland plays a fundamental role in marking harvests and rural life. And it is precisely dedicated to this imaginary hero that the artist, as an integral part of the work, has three contemporary poets compose an ode in ottava rima, an ancient oral tradition still found almost exclusively in the villages of Tuscany, which, at an exact moment during the exhibition period, will activate the work through a natural performative act. It is a metric used since the 14th century by folk singers and poets to narrate in improvised rhyme the events of the peasant lands.”
Totem is but one of Hypermaremma’s projects for 2021: this year’s edition, the festival’s third, focuses precisely on interventions that aim to redesign the Maremma landscape with the intention of returning new points of view to the viewer. Goldrake’s arm is thus one of the many points in the constellation of works and installations that make up the third edition of Hypermaremma and are scattered throughout the territory.
