Since April 1, two bronze sculptures depicting two cats, placed a short distance from each other, have appeared in CityLife, Milan, at ArtLine Milano - Parco d’Arte Contemporanea. They are the new permanent installation by Kiki Smith (Nuremberg, 1954) entitled Guardians.
"These cats are two benevolent protectors guarding the neighborhood,“ said the artist. ”Cats are mystical companions who give us joy and comfort. These sacred animals, like many other living creatures, are now perceived as a burden in modern cities. Abandoned for social and economic reasons, they are left without care and exposed to disease. Often their reproductive organs are destroyed for our convenience. Like the loss of variety in the plant world, the genetic diversity of animals is also thinning. My work for CityLife (ArtLine) is inspired by the cats that live in the moat of Castello Sforzesco."
The two sculptures, Guardiane, were unveiled along with two other new works by Mario Airò(Atrium of Looking into the Future) and Alfredo Jaar(Red Pavilion) for the City of Milan’s ArtLine Milano public art project, which is being developed in the CityLife park along the articulated path of twenty permanent works.
