The most beautiful work of street art in France in 2020? It is a spectacular trompe l’oeil by the young Spanish artist Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid, 1989) created on a staircase in Boulogne-sur-Mer, a town of forty thousand inhabitants in the Calais Pass in the north of the country. In fact, the work won the 2020 edition (the fifteenth) of the Golden Street Art competition, organized by a popular industry website, which curiously enough is called Trompe l’oeil: Borondo’s work won over both the jury and the public (in fact, the prize is determined by the scores given by eight judges to which the outcome of user voting is added).
Borondo’s work depicts a Baroque gate illusionistically placed above a staircase and flanked by frescoes that mimic seventeenth-century paintings. From a distance, it appears to see a wall enclosed by a gate, when in fact it is a staircase that moreover connects different street levels. To create this work (which is located on rue Jules Baudelocque and was executed in August 2020), the artist was inspired by works he could see in the city’s museums.
“The staircase,” the artist explained, “reveals a set of shapes and figures on each level that we find, but they can only be discovered by seeing the work as a whole. The images act as a distraction from the real goal, the ascension. In some cases they show themselves grotesque, in others harmonious and childlike. The subjects depicted arise as a result of an investigation of the territory and subjective understanding of it. For example, contact with the Jules Ferry elementary school, located at the foot of the work.” In an interview with France 3, Borondo also explained that the staircase symbolizes a limit (the fake gate) that is, however, only imaginary, because when you approach it, you discover that the gate ... does not exist, and overcoming the limit therefore allows you to discover another world.
Several images of the work, taken from different planes, can be found on the website of the city of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
