A poster with Russian President Vladimir Putin depicted with the “Z’s” of invasion in the shape of a swastika, and another with the dove of peace attacked by a raven in the colors of Russia: these are the two new works by Milanese street artist Cristina Donati Meyer, who posted them a few days ago at the Pont de Ferr in Ripa di Porta Ticinese. The two works are meant to condemn the return of war to Europe more than two decades after the Balkan wars-a conflict that has caused a huge humanitarian crisis not seen in Europe since World War II.
“Putin, net of NATO’s rearmament policies and provocations, has killed peace in Europe-this is what the pacifist work is all about,” says Donati Meyer. “Easter, the quintessential celebration of peace, is approaching, while the bombing and massacre of civilians continues in Ukraine. It is time to restore the voice of diplomacy and dialogue and to release the dove of Peace from the militaristic and aggressive grip of the raven of war.”
Cristina Donati Meyer therefore wanted to depict Putin as he draws a “Z” on the map of Ukraine. The black “Z” is overlaid with a second red “Z” intended to recall the shape of the swastika. From the beginning of the invasion, Donati Meyer recalls, Putin declared that military intervention would begin to “denazify” Ukraine. However, he says, “the effects of the invasion are there for all to see: tens of thousands of dead, millions of displaced people and refugees, hospitals, schools and theaters bombed, entire cities razed to the ground, exactly what Adolf Hitler did in the early days of World War II.” Putin had already been featured in recent days in several street art works, from Harry Greb’s depiction of the Russian president filling the peace symbol with missiles to TvBoy’s depiction of him behind bars. Donati Meyer’s works thus add to the many that condemn the war in Ukraine. The idea is that war can never find any justification.
