Stefano Russo's multisensory works, a bridge between the material and the spiritual

For some time now, artist and designer Stefano Russo has been pursuing his research on multi-sensory art that aims to invite the public to explore their inner and outer space. His most recent works are now on display in Pietrasanta, at the exhibition "The Space in Between: Evolution of Consciousness."

“I believe in creating a sense of unity between people and objects.” This is how the Sicilian artist and designer Stephen Russo, born in 1969, introduces himself, one of the leading names in Italianeyewear (he has worked for Celine, Prada, Miu Miu, and is currently a designer for Louis Vuitton Eyewear), with experience in art as well: he has collaborated with Arman and has long been developing personal projects placed between art and design. His art, in particular, is inspired by the themes of multisensoriality and quantum physics, and expressed mainly through sculptures, installations, and photographs. Using techniques of digital superimposition and manipulation, Russo creates works often capable of eliciting complex visual effects that resonate like musical frequencies, offering a very special multisensory experience.

His most recent works are on display in Pietrasanta, at The Project Space, where from July 6 the exhibition The Space in Between: Evolution of Consciousness, curated by Annalisa Bugliani and Alessandro Romanini, is on view, featuring Russo along with Ivorian Brice Esso and American Rachel Lee Hovnanian, whose works are set against those of the Sicilian-born artist. Russo’s works on display here stem from a deep conviction of his: that art possesses the power to transform the world. His works on display are intended to act as a bridge between the material and the spiritual, inviting visitors to explore their inner and outer space.

“Energy,” explains critic Alice Manni, "is the thought-generating concept/archetype behind The Space in Between: Evolution of Consciousness. Energy used as a spiritual process of personal knowledge, fragmented between that intrinsic in each of us and that in which we live immersed in this universe. It is neither obvious nor simple to understand the power of this beauty, which is why Stephen Russo believes it is fundamental to learn to know it, to know how to understand it, to modulate it and to live it, with the unique goal of regaining personal and consequently, global well-being. To do this he uses his works, spiritual doors that exhort us to give a new value to the objects that surround us, aiming to establish a reflective relationship between us and the object: the works in the exhibition are conceived as tools-sculptures with a strong energetic power and an intrinsic transformative power, conceived as means for education, reflection and understanding, for a conscious use of spirituality. The sculptures and photographs in the exhibition, all previously unseen, were conceived according to principles of bio-geometry, shaped with harmonic proportions and resonant materials."

Russo’s works were conceived as tools for theelevation of consciousness, through forms intended to interact with the surrounding energy and act on inner transformation through observation and interaction. The main core of the exhibition, with works all made in 2024, is presented as a triptych. Each of the sculpture-instruments that comprise it was created with the intention of infusing strength, drawing from the transformative motive force of nature. These three works act as separate energy catalysts, but together they form a triptych of great positive power. The three works, all made of steel and marble, are Space in Between (of 70x30x60cm: representing the balance found in the intermediate space between positive and negative forces and generating a fertile energy field for creativity and intuition), Harmonious Union (measuring 60x50x60cm, represents harmony and connection between all things: using the shape of the circle and sphere, the work acts as a catalyst for inner transformation and the pursuit of awareness) and Power in Connection (measures 50x40x80cm and embodies the power arising from awareness of the synchronic connection between all elements: it represents evolutionary power and continuous personal growth).

Among the works in the exhibition is the photographic project Dancing of the Photons from 2024. This project explores the connection between light and sound from a scientific-spiritual perspective. Russo’s photographs deconstruct and reconstruct the electromagnetic spectrum down to the level of the photon, analyzing the entire human visual spectrum. Central to this project is the number 7, which represents a key to universal understanding: the 7 colors of the visible spectrum, the 7 musical notes of the diatonic scale and the 7 chakras of the human body. Each color, with its unique energetic vibration, is associated with a musical note and resonates at a frequency of 432 Hz, in harmony with natural laws. The photographs are intended to emerge as visual and sound symphonies, where photons dance in perfect tune with musical notes.

These are works that continue Russo’s journey in inviting visitors to reflect on the connection with the world around them and to seek a balance between mind, body and spirit, with the goal of continuing to explore the relationship between the individual and the universe, promoting a new awareness of the profound interdependence between all elements of existence.
