Sarzana Fortress becomes a rainbow: here's Dale's installation

The Sarzana Fortress becomes the scene of the world's largest installation on a fortified building: the work of Italian artist Dale.

Sarzana ’s 15th-century Fortezza Firmafede is about to become the site of the world’s largest installation created on a fortified building: it is the work The Fortress of Peace - Kaleidoscope Rain by artist Dale (Luca Fruzzetti; Massa, 1993), who is accustomed to working on large formats (in the summer he entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest painting created by a single artist, a 5-kilometer canvas). The work is a cascade of rainbows painted on canvas, hanging from the outer walls of the Firmafede Fortress in a message of optimism and hope toward the future. It is officially unveiled on Saturday, November 28: the work was created in collaboration with the Regional Museums Directorate of Liguria and the City of Sarzana.

The Fortress of Peace - Kaleidoscope Rain was also created in response to the moment of profound uncertainty related to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is pushing art and culture to experiment with new modes of creative expression; the installation, therefore, was created as a necessary experience of connecting with individuals, community and contemporary society. In Dale’s work, art is meant to be a means and instrument of relationship: the representations come together with the simplicity of their creation in a reflection on hope and trust toward the future through a journey into the colors of peace.

“The rainbow,” Dale tells us, “leads us to the wonder generated between raindrops and sunlight, all accompanied by graceful butterflies in a dimension of lightness. The butterflies that flutter throughout the work refer to the importance of the culture of sharing, even more so in this highly complex situation where we need to act with courage and hope toward the future.”

The work is also designed to dialogue in tune with the architecture of the Firmafede Fortress, the usual theater of artistic and cultural events and happenings, creating a physical and intellectual interaction with the structure, the citizens and passersby who are faced with this passage between history and contemporaneity. The design and realization of the work took five months, completed thanks to the contribution of companies from all over Italy that supported the project together with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism - Regional Directorate Museums Liguria and the Municipality of Sarzana. The installation will remain visible to the public until Sunday, January 10, 2021, when the work will be de-installed and will follow an exhibition path of propaedeutics for peace in the main theater of culture places in Italy and in the main museums of contemporary art in the world promoting the message of hope toward the future from a global perspective.
