Forty years after Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s famous Pont Neuf Wrapped, a new monumental art project by JR, an artist known for his spectacular urban interventions, is taking shape to pay tribute to the couple’s visionary work. In September 2025, Paris will celebrate the anniversary of this historic transformative artwork that temporarily changed the face of the city’s oldest bridge from Sept. 22 to Oct. 5, 1985.
At the time, the Pont Neuf Wrapped was created through the efforts of 12 engineers and 300 skilled workers, who wrapped the bridge in 41,800 square meters of canvas secured with 13 kilometers of ropes and 12 tons of steel cables. The project, conceived in 1975, required a decade of technical planning and complex negotiations with authorities before it saw the light of day. For two weeks, some three million visitors saw the work, free to interpret it according to their own vision, in line with Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s fundamental artistic principle: art as a personal and unique experience.
In 2025, JR will collaborate with the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation to create Projet Pont Neuf, animmersive installation that reimagines the artist couple’s project. Throughout September, the Pont Neuf will be transformed into a giant cave connecting the two banks of the Seine. Designed to be experienced both by day and night, the work will see large rock formations emerge on the bridge to emphasize the origins of Parisian architecture inspired by the quarries from which the stones from which the city was built were extracted.
The installation represents a dialogue between past and present, combining the raw, primordial appearance of stone with the refined elegance of Paris.
The year 2025 will also be significant for other anniversaries related to Christo and Jeanne-Claude. In addition to the 40th anniversary of the Wrapped Pont Neuf, it will mark the 90th anniversary of the artists’ birth, both of whom were born on June 13, 1935; the 20th anniversary of The Gates in New York in February; and the 30th anniversary of the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin in June.
