Rougier&Plé, a historic brand that produces colors and tools for art, synonymous with creativity and modernity, has announced an extraordinary transformation of its historic building in the Marais district of Paris. Starting this fall, the storefront on the boulevard des Filles du Calvaire will be renovated thanks to a project conceived by renowned French artist Daniel Buren, with a work to be called In Situ.
Daniel Buren, born in 1938, is one of the most internationally recognized contemporary artists. A painter, sculptor, and plasticist, Buren has won numerous awards including the Golden Lion for Best Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1986, the International Award for Best Artist in Stuttgart in 1991, and the Imperial Premium for Painting in Tokyo in 2007. His work is characterized by the economy of media used and the interaction between ground and form, always with a focus on the place for which the work is conceived.
The work In Situ, conceived for the facade of the Rougier&Plé store, uses Buren’s “tool visuel.” It consists of alternating white and colored vertical bands, 8.7 cm wide, harmoniously juxtaposed next to colored windows. This design transforms the reception venue in harmony with its historic architecture. According to Buren, the transformation of place always occurs interactively: the artistic tool acts on the place and vice versa, creating an end result that is a fusion between the work and its host space.
The In Situ project represents an opportunity for Rougier&Plé to rediscover its historic space. The work and the artist’s work are fully funded by the company, and Buren’s work aims to make the independent buildings coherent, balancing the architecture and unifying the facades.
In Situ aims to offer a new perspective on the atypical and historic form of the Rougier&Plé building, integrating with the rhythmic and coherent verticals of the boulevard. This project not only aspires to enhance the Marais, but also to transform the store into a unique place of inspiration open to all, continuing Rougier&Plé’s mission to “share the pleasure of understanding, learning, and creating together.”
