Olafur Eliasson in collaboration with British writer Robert Macfarlane will create a new work, the Icelandic-Danish artist’s first permanent outdoor artwork in the UK, tentatively titled Your Daylight Destination. A winner from among designs by four internationally renowned teams of creatives, the work, which will be created near Silecroft in Cumbria, is part of a wide-ranging improvement project aimed at shining a spotlight on this stretch of coastline in northwest England, commissioned by Copeland Borough Council and funded by the U.K. government’s Coastal Communities Fund, the Arts Council of England and Sellafield Ltd’s Six: Social Impact, Multiplied program.
The work will consist of several elements: a series of rings mounted on supports at different angles, a circular platform, and an elliptical pool extending thirty meters into the tidal flats. Twice a day, at high tide, the pool will be completely submerged. The water that remains there after the tide has receded again will become a mirror and reflect the sky.
From a viewing platform, visitors will be able to see the pool framed by the rings as a perfect circle. The pattern of rings aligned around the circle was inspired by a type of prehistoric rock art found around Cumbria.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to make this contemplative artwork for Copeland. In a way it is a humble reflection of what is already there - the beach, the water, the sky, the plants and animals - framed within a space that invites self-discovery from a perspective of deep time,” Eliasson said.
