Nicola Samorì reinterprets Raphael's Madonna of Foligno


On the occasion of the project Raffaello e la Madonna di Foligno: la fortuna di un modello (Raphael and the Madonna of Foligno: the fortune of a model), Nicola Samorì reinterprets Urbino's masterpiece in a contemporary key.

Until October 24, 2021 Palazzo Trinci in Foligno is hosting the exhibition Raphael and the Madonna of Foligno: the fortune of a model, which is divided into two contemporary art exhibition events both related to Raphael’s masterpiece and both curated by Marta Silvi. The entire project is realized by the City and Diocese of Foligno.

On the one hand, the contemporary exhibition Dei santi e del fuoco (Of Saints and Fire ) by Nicola Samorì: the artist was invited to reread and reinterpret the Madonna di Foligno by Urbino in a contemporary key and with his characteristic style. He then presented a special project conceived for the occasion.



On the other hand, the group exhibition of eighteen artists (Dario Agati, Feliciano Benci, Beatrice Caruso, Giuseppe de Mattia, Stefano Emili, Fabio Giorgi Alberti, Giovanni Kronenberg, Meletios Meletiou, Leonardo Petrucci, Sofia Ricciardi, Massimo Ricciardo, Guendalina Salini & Delphine Valli, Alessandro Scarabello, Karin Schmuck, Danilo Sciorilli, Caterina Silva and Cosimo Veneziano) winners of the open call The Madonna of Foligno, the meteorite and the punctum. How to reread a masterpiece launched in late October 2020. In response to the call, 114 applications were received with more than 150 projects aimed at rereading the Madonna of Foligno in a contemporary key. The final vote identified several ex aequo that allowed the admission of 17 works instead of the planned 10, for eighteen artists. The winning work will be purchased by the City of Foligno for a value of three thousand euros and will become part of the City’s permanent collection of contemporary art.
