Milan’s Stazione Centrale is transformed into a public art space during Design Week 2024 with a new intervention by JR, titled La Nascita, a monumental installation that “opens” to Moncler’s immersive exhibition An Invitation to Dream, hosted in the station. French artist JR is known for his ability to create huge monumental works that interact with the surrounding space and buildings, such as his previous La Ferita at Palazzo Strozzi and Punto di fuga at Palazzo Farnese. The work The Birth of JR, exhibited in Piazza Duca d’Aosta, aims to highlight the past and present of the site, offering a unique perspective on the transformations that have occurred over time. Through this installation, visitors are invited to explore the history of the station.
The installation The Birth, visible from April 10 to May 1, mixes architectural and artistic elements, creating a visual experience through the use of trompe-l’oeil. This fusion of elements ranging across different styles aims to create a kind of visual collage that traces the history of the place.
It is also the first sculptural anamorphosis used by JR, who printed the image directly on aluminum panels instead of using his typical paper and glue. The result is a surreal architectural fantasy that transports the audience on a journey through the station’s past and present. Inside the station, Moncler’s immersive exhibition An Invitation To Dream," curated by Jefferson Hack and filmed and photographed by Jack Davison, explores the theme of dreaming through personalities such as Daniel Arsham, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Isamaya Ffrench, Laila Gohar, Jeremy O. Harris, Francesca Hayward, Julianknxx, Ruth Rogers, Remo Ruffini, Rina Sawayama, Sumayya Vally, and Zaya. Jefferson Hack’s curatorial approach, focused on the transformation of public spaces, transforms the Milano Centrale train station into an immersive environment through the use of the station’s billboards and advertising screens to create an imaginary landscape animated by images and quotations, overpowering the noise of the station and inviting the public to dream.
The decision to use Milano Centrale station as a location to explore the theme of dreaming is related to its nature: being a point of arrival and departure for travelers from all over the world, it represents the desire to explore new horizons and to turn dreams into reality. The exhibition will remain on view from April 15 to 21.
