On the occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day, the Shoah Memorial at Milan’s Central Station presented the new site-specific neon work by Marcello Maloberti (Codogno, Lodi, 1966). The work, entitled Invitami notte a immaginare le stelle (Invite me night to imagine the stars ) is designed for the exterior facade of the Museum, where it will remain visible.
It was created with the involvement of life senator Liliana Segre, a survivor and spokesperson for all victims of the Shoah, and was unveiled to the public on Friday, January 27, live on Rai1 as part of the exclusive television event Binario 21 . The idea of celebrating Holocaust Memorial Day with a public art project stems from the collaboration between the Milan Shoah Memorial and Rai. The senator led the Binario 21 audience on a journey through memory, reconstructing the story of that terrible day in 1944 that brought her to Auschwitz.
During the evening, the site-specific work created by Marcello Maloberti and donated by the artist together with Milan’s Raffaella Cortese Gallery to the museum was presented. Placed on the entrance facade, like a classical frieze, the white neon phrase illuminates the Memorial and the square in front of it. The light work acts as a temporal sign, a metaphysical place of encounter with the visitor. The writing, from the artist’s iconic Martellate, traces the handwriting of Liliana Segre, invited by Maloberti to transcribe a message of strength and hope. The words become the gateway, the threshold to cross to enter the dark and immersive spaces of Binario 21, enveloping and accompanying the visitor’s experience.
Night is a symbol of darkness and a metaphor for the abyss, and Maloberti invites the audience, precisely during the night, not to be indifferent, but to continue to imagine the stars even and especially when they cannot be seen.
