Lodi, Platea, a new exhibition space for contemporary art...showcased, is born

Platea, a new exhibition space for contemporary art that intends to provoke a "gaze incident," was born in downtown Lodi.

A new exhibition space for contemporary art is born in the center of Lodi: Platea | Palazzo Galeano. A cultural association founded in 2020 with the aim of supporting young talent and artistic production; founding members are Claudia Ferrari, Laura Ferrari, Carlo Orsini, Luca Bucci, Lorenzo Bucci and Gianluigi Corsi, who are passionate about art and architecture.

Chaired by Claudia Ferrari, Platea is located in an essential space, facing the street, created in the rooms of the porter’s lodge of the seventeenth-century Palazzo Galeano, following a restoration and functional redesign aimed at building a display window that is freely and continuously accessible: inaccessible from the outside, it is in fact always open and available for viewing.

Platea owes its name to Lodi-born artist Marcello Maloberti, who, in making a gift to the Association of what was to be the title of one of his new performances, said,"Platea is a tribute to the city. The name of the space emphasizes the importance of the audience, arranged in a large ’stalls,’ which then is the city of Lodi, but also, quoting Harald Szeemann, the ’stalls’ of humanity. And for me, the audience is my body." It was from this very gesture that the cultural project was developed, which aims to support the youngest creative generations through collaborations with established artists and the involvement of outstanding contemporary art galleries.

The project is based on the concept of the stalls, also understood as a very current way of exhibiting: the work offers itself to the gaze of the passerby who unwittingly crosses it on his path. For this reason, the works that will make up the exhibition cycles that are the protagonists of Platea will be selected for their ability to provoke “an accident of gaze,” as stressed in the Association’s Manifesto.

Exhibition projects that will be held in several episodes, autonomous but consistent with each other. On the program is a series of solo exhibitions that together compose an interconnected path thanks to the dialogical relationship between a group of young artists and a master. In fact, the whole project is based on the presence of a virtuous dialogue between the young invited artists and a renowned and experienced artist, recognized by the group as a master.

Inaugurating Platea | Palazzo Galeano on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, will be Marcello Maloberti (Codogno, 1966), with a multifaceted project created in collaboration with Galleria Raffaella Cortese. The intervention includes the photographic installation Trionfo dell’Aurora (2018) and a performance. An internationally renowned artist, Maloberti will thus be the “tutelary deity” of the debut exhibition schedule coordinated by Francesca Grossi, which will subsequently develop through the interventions of four young artists: Vittoria Viale, Giulio Locatelli, Silvia Berry, and Vittoria Mazzonis. Each of them will present for a month an original work, designed specifically for Platea.

With this initiative, Platea | Palazzo Galeano aims to boost a new relational ecosystem in the city, based on the sharing of cultural and aesthetic values, inviting the public and citizenship to participate through different formulas of patronage, to strengthen the sense of community and civic responsibility.
