In your shoes: Bertozzi & Casoni present their new work during the Festival Filosofia

On the occasion of the Modena Philosophy Festival, Bertozzi & Casoni present a new work: it is "In Your Shoes," an invitation by the celebrated ceramic duo to put themselves in the shoes of others.

On the occasion of the Festival Filosofia 2022, Bertozzi & Casoni, the great Italian ceramic duo, presents a preview of the work: In Your Shoes. An Epiphany, 2022, polychrome ceramic, 20 by 84 by 84 cm installation.

The work was created as an invitation to put oneself “in the shoes” of all people, especially the “invisible,” an epiphany is needed, making any pair of worn-out shoes anyone’s shoes. According to James Joyce, “epiphany is a sudden spiritual revelation, caused by a gesture, an object, a situation of everyday life, perhaps trivial, but unexpectedly revealing something deeper and more significant.”

“One day, sitting on the sofa,” Giampaolo Bertozzi recalls, “in front of me I noticed my old, worn-out shoes. They were placed on the floor in a position that seemed to be looking at me. I found them irresistible and thought of reproducing them in ceramic, a truer-than-life reproduction that leaves no doubt about the subject portrayed. Why? The question went round and round in my head until I realized that it is part of those symbolic objects that want to question us about the meaning of life and its transience.”

The work can be seen at the Bertozzi & Casoni Museum in Sassuolo starting Sept. 16, the opening day of Festival Filosofia 2022. Hours during the festival: Friday 16 and Saturday 17 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 18 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The work will then remain on display at the museum until Oct. 16, viewable on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 7:30 p.m.
