Hauser & Wirth, one of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries, is expanding, with a new opening: next to its headquarters in Switzerland (where Hauser & Wirth has galleries in Zurich, Gstaad, and Sankt Moritz), its U.S. locations (its two galleries in New York and those in Southampton and Los Angeles), its U.K. locations (London and Somerset), and its galleries in Menorca, Munich, and Hong Kong, the historic gallery now lands in Paris. Indeed, Hauser & Wirth has announced plans to open a new gallery on the right bank of the Seine, near the Champs-Élysées, in the 8th arrondissement.
The gallery will open in an entire hôtel particulier dating back to 1877, at 26 bis rue François 1er: Hauser & Wirth’s new headquarters will cover 800 square meters on four floors. The neoclassical building formerly housed La Maison Decor, a decorative arts gallery, until the 1940s. The conversion of the space will restore the six-meter-high, double-height ground-floor gallery with additional exhibition space on the second floor.
Hauser & Wirth also continues a longstanding commitment to supporting the cultural and architectural heritage of the communities in which it has a presence. Hauser & Wirth’s new Paris space will be designed by Parisian architect Luis Laplace, who has worked closely with the gallery since 2013 on several projects that have sensitively restored architecturally significant buildings. Collaborations between Hauser & Wirth and Laplace include the current creation of a new London flagship gallery in the former Thomas Goode building in Mayfair, the creation of an art center on Isla del Rey in Menorca from disused former naval buildings, and the conversion of a historic 18th-century farmhouse into Hauser & Wirth Somerset, which opened in 2014.
“We make no secret of the fact that for a number of years,” says Iwan Wirth, president of Hauser & Wirth, “we have been looking for the perfect home for Hauser & Wirth in Paris, and I am delighted that the search is over. We have a deep respect for the incredible cultural community in Paris. The city’s importance to artists has gone unchallenged over the centuries, and we look forward to enriching it with this rich history. Our love for Paris extends beyond the gallery’s 30 years and matches that of our artists, many of whom have already been embraced by the Parisian art community, institutions and collectors who are very supportive of our program. In this sense, the city is a natural choice for the gallery and we look forward to presenting our first exhibitions in our beautiful new space.”
Hauser & Wirth was founded in 1992 in Zurich by Iwan Wirth, Manuela Wirth and Ursula Hauser, who were joined in 2000 by partner and co-president Marc Payot. The gallery is a family business with a global perspective: the gallery’s artists and venues have been instrumental in shaping its identity over three decades and are the inspiration for Hauser & Wirth’s wide range of activities.
