Eataly opens its museum: it's Eataly Art House, dedicated to contemporary art

Eataly is also opening an art foundation: it is Eataly Art House and is an institute dedicated to contemporary art. It is based in Verona in the former Stazione Frigorifera, redeveloped by Mario Botta.

Eataly, the famous Italian gastronomy company, will also have its own Foundation for Art: in fact, Eataly Art House - E.ART.H., a new Foundation dedicated toconemporary art, a new space for the discovery of visual arts that will be based at the historic Specialized Refrigeration Station in Verona, Italy, is born. E.ART.H. will have a dual soul, cultural and commercial, with the aim of promoting awareness of the visual arts among the general public through new formulas of fruition and stimulating new frontiers of collecting.

Eataly Art House - E.ART.H. was strongly desired by Francesco Farinetti, president of Green Pea, Oscar Farinetti, founder of Eataly, and Chiara Ventura, cultural manager: the goal is to open its doors to the public at the end of September 2022 in Verona in the spaces of the former Specialized Refrigeration Station. Built in 1930 and known for being the largest icehouse in Europe until the 1970s, the former Specialized Refrigeration Station in Verona is preparing to welcome the public following a major restoration and environmental redevelopment under the banner of full sustainability, signed by architect Mario Botta.

More than ten thousand square meters of refrigerated cells and a reinforced concrete dome with a diameter of 24 meters will be made functional after a long period of neglect to house the new headquarters of Eataly and Eataly Art House - E.ART.H. E.ART.H. aims to stimulate knowledge and culture among the general public by applying the values of Eataly and Green Pea - accessibility, inclusiveness, responsibility, sharing and sustainability - to the enjoyment of visual arts. All through a novel formula that facilitates encounters with the work, artists and practitioners. The second floor of the building will be dedicated toArt House and its cultural programming, defined by a curatorial committee composed of Eva Brioschi, art historian and critic, Walter Guadagnini, director of Camera - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin, and Gaspare Luigi Marcone, art historian and curator.

Inaugurating E.ART.H.’s exhibition activities will be the solo shows of two established contemporary artists: Ghanaian Ibrahim Mahama (Tamale, 1987), curated by Eva Brioschi, and Dutchman Anton Corbijn (Strijen, 1055), curated by Walter Guadagnini. Each exhibition will be flanked by a Public Program: a calendar of in-depth initiatives such as conversations, workshops, and meetings with artists and curators to explore both the themes touched upon by the works and artists on view and the multiple connections to the principles behind E.ART.H.

On the other hand, the ground floor of the building will host, in addition to Eataly, theArt Market, distributed along three corridors arranged in a radial pattern with temporary installations divided by sphere: visual arts and photography, in collaboration with some of the most important galleries active on the Italian and international territory, and selections of works dedicated to always different artists selected by E.ART.H. For the first time, paintings, sculptures, photographic images and more are offered to the general public, leaving the spaces traditionally devoted to the sale of artworks, to stimulate new forms of collecting.

Also active until Oct. 9, 2022 is the open call for the “E.ART.H. Prize,” the first edition of the annual prize aimed at artists under thirty-five, coordinated by the curatorial duo Treti Galaxie formed by Matteo Mottin and Ramona Ponzini. Until October 9, it will be possible to propose one’s candidacy by following the indications of the open call published on the website www.eatalyarthouse.it/premio/; participation is open to artists not represented by a gallery and with at least one exhibition to their credit, who will be able to propose one of their works in response to the theme chosen for the first edition, that of biodiversity.

“E.ART.H.,” reads a note, “wants to give life to a new reality: a design unicum that is able to present itself as an unprecedented interlocutor of excellence for the art world, but also as a platform of encounter and discovery for a heterogeneous public, going beyond the traditional patterns of fruition of the work.”
