Celebrated British artist David Hockney created in the first lockdown, which he spent in Normandy, adigital work that will be shown in five different cities around the world throughout May. Created on his iPad, the work entitled Remember you cannot look at the sun or death for very long intends to invite people to see the beauty of nature. It is also a reflection on spring as a time of awakening and rebirth.
It is an animated sunrise, a message of hope projected on the big screens at Piccadilly Circus in London and then on those in New York, Los Angeles, Seoul, and Tokyo at specific times. The video is three minutes long: on the gradually rising sun, the artist has drawn long yellow rays that illuminate the landscape even more.
“What does the world look like? We need to take time to admire its beauty. I hope my work will invite people to do so when they see it on the big screens,” Hockney himself said.
The video can also be viewed on the website of CIRCA, a digital platform created by Josef O’Connor
