Aclandestine work at the Venice Biennale with the charitable intent of helping the people of Ukraine. It will happen from April 20, 2022 until a date to be determined (the installation is open-ended): the work is titled Yuo and bears the signature of Luca Rossi, the artist-critic-collective who has been active on the contemporary art scene since 2009, often with projects that have caused much discussion.
Luca Rossi has not revealed what the work will look like or where it will be located: all that is known is that it will be hidden in the Biennale Gardens. Visitors to the major international exhibition, however, will be able to purchase a ticket for only 10 euros, which, in addition to providing directions to find the installation, will also contain a critical text and a second work specially designed for the Giardini della Biennale di Venezia.
The work will address the drama of the Russian-Ukrainian issue and at the same time some of the most pressing issues of our time.Luca Rossi, during his many social posts, has shown that he cares a great deal about the issue and has repeatedly criticized the artist of the Italian Pavilion of the Biennale 2022, Gianmaria Tosatti, for the words he spoke at a press conference in February when Russia was about to attack Ukraine: Tosatti had spoken of “smallness of man” referring to “Russia, America, Ukraine, we are always there talking about the usual bullshit, war ... we never move, this is the battle we have lost, the war we have lost, we are not evolving.” Luca Rossi commented on Tosatti’s words, writing on his social channels, “As with the Covid situation, war and international political issues, Tosatti’s words, leave artists completely bewildered and unable to process what is happening. But should artists face these issues? Not necessarily. But they need to demonstrate coherence and relevance between statements, context and projects. If there is consistency between these three aspects any work and any project has value. This is because artists are not asked to save and understand the world like lawyers, pharmacists and painters are not asked to.”
The critical text, Luca Rossi points out, will refer to philosopher Byun-Chul Han and in particular to the phenomenon of digitization that has invaded and disrupted our everyday life. The famous Korean-born philosopher speaks of a society based solely on performance and the progressive isolation of the individual. Half of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the Italian Red Cross committed to supporting the people of Ukraine. To purchase tickets and find out about the work, you can go to Luca Rossi’s website.
