At Art Basel, Italy is among the powerhouses of contemporary art. 21 of our galleries

Italy will appear at the 2023 edition of Art Basel, the most prestigious art fair on the globe, among the world's contemporary art powers. 21 of our galleries: only the US, Germany, the UK and France have more. Here's who's participating.

Art Basel, the world’s leading art fair to be held this year from June 15 to 18, 2023 at the Basel Fairgrounds in Basel , Switzerland, has unveiled the shortlist of 285 galleries from around the world that will participate in the 2023 edition. The galleries come from 36 countries, from Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

For the new edition, Art Basel will bring together leading international galleries to present artworks of the highest quality across all media (from painting and sculpture to photography and digital works) by artists ranging from early 20th-century modern pioneers to contemporaries.

In what is considered a sort of Champions League of art fairs, the most prestigious art fair in the world, this year’s Italian patrol consists of twenty-one galleries: Milan’s Galleria Raffaella Cortese, A Arte Invernizi, Giò Marconi, Christan Stein, Zero, M77, Cardi, Kaufmann Repetto, Massimo De Carlo, Brescia’s Massimo Minini, Naples’ Alfonso Artiaco and Lia Rumma, Sicily’s Laveronica Arte Contemporanea, Tuscany’s Tornabuoni and Continua, Turin’s Tucci Russo and Franco Noero, Rome’s Magazzino and Lorcan O’Neill, the Venetian Victoria Miro and the Verona-based Galleria dello Scudo. It is a larger contingent than in 2022, when there were 19 Italian galleries at Art Basel out of a total of 289. Three galleries from last year’s contingent are not participating: Bologna’s GAM and P420 and Florence’s Veda. Confirmed are all the others who had taken part in the 2022 expedition.

Italy is among the most represented countries: it is preceded only by the United States (62), Germany (45), the United Kingdom (33) and France (25). It is followed by Switzerland (17), Belgium (12), China (8), Austria (7), Brazil (6), Mexico (5), Denmark (4), Spain (4), Japan (3), Canada (3), Greece (3), South Korea (3), India (3), Portugal (3), South Africa (3), Colombia (2), Ireland (2), Poland (2), Egypt (1), Georgia (1), Indonesia (1), Kosovo (1), Lebanon (1), Norway (1), Netherlands (1), Singapore (1), Hungary (1).

The 2023 edition of Art Basel in Basel will feature 21 newcomers, including three galleries entering directly into the main sector of the exhibition, and 18 galleries participating for the first time in the Feature and Statements sectors: among them is an Italian, M77 from Milan, which is part of the Feature program. The Sicilian Laveronica, from Modica, on the other hand, returns for the second time after its debut in 2022. For all info on the fair you can visit the Art Basel website.
