The Museu Diocesà de Barcelona, also known as Casa de la Almoina, is hosting an exhibition until June 9, 2025, dedicated to the five artistic proposals conceived to create theAgnus Dei to be placed inside the cross at the top of the tower of Jesus Christ of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. This is an essential element that Antoni Gaudí envisioned in his plans for the Basilica, as shown in the Àlbums del Temple, published by the Temple Development Association while the architect was alive, where there is an explicit reference to theLamb of God.
On September 20, 2023, the Board of Directors of the Junta Constructora de la Sagrada Família decided to launch a competition to select the work that will represent theAgnus Dei. Five internationally renowned artists were invited to participate: the Italians Edoardo Tresoldi and Andrea Mastrovito, whose work was chosen for the realization, Portugal’s David Oliveira, and Spaniards Gonzalo Borondo and Jordi Alcaraz.
Winning the competition was Andrea Mastrovito ’s proposal “for the elegance of the golden light and the ’luminous’ transparency of the figure of the Lamb.” For Mastrovito, the Lamb suspended between earth and sky symbolizes the relationship between matter and energy, between the Son and the Father. The Lamb will be made of hollow glass and covered with glass fragments, and will be suspended within a hyperboloid illuminated with gold leaf. Indeed, the key element of the work is its relationship with light.
Among the five international artists invited to propose a work for theLamb on the Tower of Jesus Christ was another Italian: Edoardo Tresoldi.
His sculptural proposal reinterprets the Lamb as a triumphant and resurrected symbol, recalling the mystery of death and resurrection. His work is designed to develop within a parallelepiped with an octagonal base enveloped in a silvery mist that expands like an exploded crystal. In the center, the standing Lamb is pierced by a pillar of light descending from heaven. The mist thins out revealing the presence of an empty space, silhouetted as an egg, a symbol of life beyond sacrifice.
Tresoldi conceived this geometric structure as an organism of light, in which transparencies and reflections merge to reveal and conceal at the same time. The sculpture is made of wire mesh, enriched with mirrored inserts. The supporting metal panels are integrated into a monometric composition.
