Active art: a series of meetings in Milan on art, community and territories

On the occasion of Milan Art Week, Fondazione Imago Mundi presents a mini-cycle of meetings, with some leading figures in contemporary Italian art, to dialogue about the role of art as a social activator.

On the occasion of Milan Art Week 2021, Fondazione Imago Mundi presents, with 21 Way Of Living, the mini-cycle of meetings Arte Attiva / When art activates communities and territories, featuring leading figures from the contemporary art world. The appointments are Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m., with Marinella Senatore, artist, and Roberta Tenconi, curator Pirelli HangarBicocca, and Sunday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m., with Sveva D’Antonio Taurisano and Bruno Bolfo, collectors, together with Alberto Salvadori, director and founder Fondazione ICA Mlano, in dialogue with Elisa Carollo, curator Fondazione Imago Mundi.

The red thread of the appointments is art as a social activator and the impact it can generate in contemporary society. The different actors that populate the cultural system (from the artist to the private user, from museums and galleries to art dealers) combine to compose a composite reality in which art is an engine of innovation, change and collective progress. The venue for the events is instead the 21 Way Of Living space on Via Enrico Nöe in Milan. In addition, from Sept. 13 to 19, the structure will host Marinella Senatore’s light installation Bodies in Alliance, a colorful and multicolored work, a structure of illuminations inspired by the folk tradition of southern Italy and, at the same time, a theatrical backdrop, a podium on which to express oneself dedicated to each of us. In Senatore’s own words, “at a historical moment when the whole world is coming from a year and a half of confinement and social distance, this work is meant to be a recognition not of the fallen or heroes of the past, but of the people who, here and now, through their effort, individuality and sociality can build new ideas of collectivity and community.” Bodies in Alliance was created last June for Gallerie delle Prigioni, an exhibition space of Fondazione Imago Mundi in Treviso, where it will return at the end of its Milan sojourn, and is part of the exhibition “Italian Twist,” which can be visited until Nov. 7.

The first meeting, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, will feature Marinella Senatore, an artist who has made community participation her hallmark, who will dialogue with Pirelli HangarBicocca curator Roberta Tenconi on the role of the artist as an activator, thanks to her works, of virtuous processes of individual and civic awareness in the community. It will continue on Sept. 19 with young collectors Sveva D’Antonio Taurisano and Bruno Bolfo, who with Alberto Salvadori, director and founder of Fondazione ICA Milano, and Elisa Carollo of Fondazione Imago Mundi, will reflect on the ways in which collectors can actively contribute both to the careers of artists and to the enhancement of local communities and territories.

The different actors that populate the cultural system (from the artist to the private user, from museums and galleries to art dealers) combine to compose a composite reality in which art is an engine of innovation, change and collective progress. In this sense, the role of art in the contemporary context is to grasp and be the spokesperson for common instances and to relate to the community, which in this way from public becomes an active component and participant in a creative process with clear social, choral and inclusive connotations.

To register for the meetings, simply register on the appropriate page of Eventbrite. To participate in the appointments, a green pass is required. The meetings will also be broadcast on the Imago Mundi Foundation’s Instagram account.
