The program Ulysses: the pleasure of discovery, hosted by Alberto Angela, returns this evening in prime time on Rai1 at 9:25 pm.
The new episode of this unprecedented series is dedicated to two protagonists of the Middle Ages: St. Francis and St. Clare. In fact, the lives of Francis and Clare will be told: two young men destined to inherit the honors of their social status, but who realize that that way of life does not satisfy them and choose their own path. Alberto Angela will take viewers to anunseen Assisi, empty because of the pandemic. Among the alleys of the city, where the story of Francis took place, they will retrace the most significant stages of his journey to faith: from the church of San Damiano, in which, according to tradition, the words of a crucifix changed his existence forever, to the Portiuncula now located inside the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. They will be joined by a noble girl, Clare. Escaping a destiny that wanted her to be a wife and mother, she will reveal in time all her greatness. She is the first woman in history to write a Rule for her order, obtaining a bull from Pope Gregory IX. At the Sacro Convento in Assisi, Alberto Angela, welcomed by Father Moroni and Sergio Fusetti, restorer of the Basilica of St. Francis, will climb up to the roof sails to follow the important restoration of Giotto ’s frescoes and Giottesque paintings. At the Hermitage of the Prisons, the atmosphere of meditation and prayer in the cave of the poverello of Assisi will be relived. Finally, a stop will be made at the Sanctuary of Greccio, in the valley of the Rieti region very dear to the saint. Together with medievalist Chiara Frugoni, the foremost expert on studies of the saint, the most subversive aspects of Francis will be traced. The story of a man who, without ever asking for privileges from the Curia, worked together with his companions wherever someone could be helped. Between crusades and fears of epidemics, Francis’ simple heart comes across as disorienting.
