Tomorrow night on Rai1 an Alberto Angela special on Pompeii, filmed as a guided tour

Monday, May 27 at 9:25 p.m. on Rai1 airs "Pompeii. The New Discoveries," a special by Alberto Angela on new Pompeian discoveries. All filmed in a single sequence plan to give the impression of a guided tour.

Alberto Angela, TV’s most popular popularizer, stars in a special on Pompeii that airs Monday, May 27 at 9:25 p.m. on Rai1. The program is titled Pompeii . The New Discoveries and will talk about the new findings at the Pompeii Archaeological Park (including drawings of a child from 2,000 years ago), some of which have never been exhibited before, with the participation of director Gabriel Zuchtriegel, archaeologists and park technicians. The program is produced by Rai Cultura in collaboration with the Archaeological Park and the Ministry of Culture.

The special, filmed entirely in Pompeii at the new excavation sites, uses a unique filming technique: a continuous sequence plan of more than two hours, which follows Alberto Angela in his exploration without interruption. This mode allows viewers to feel as if they are participating in an actual visit to the excavations, personally guided by Angela. The absence of breaks allows a clear view of the layout of the spaces, the distances covered and the vastness of the archaeological site. It will be like walking through the ancient city submerged by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., observing everyday objects, frescoes, graffiti and other evidence of life at the time resurfacing from the volcanic material.

The tour begins at theOdeion, the smaller of Pompeii’s two theaters, with Vesuvius in the background. It then continues along the ancient streets, passing through stores, baths, inns and private houses, where every step reveals traces of daily life in the first century AD. The route continues into the Insula dei Casti Amanti, a block partially explored in the past and now the subject of new excavations, which have unearthed the remains of other victims of the eruption. Archaeologists, still at work, show Alberto Angela and the public previously unseen environments, objects of daily life and extraordinary works of art that have come to light again after nearly two thousand years. Particularly moving are a child’s drawings, traced in charcoal shortly before the tragedy and surviving through the centuries.

After a brief transfer by car over the unexcavated area of Pompeii, Alberto Angela explores Regio IX, where he reveals splendid frescoed halls and a painted room, discovered during the filming of the special and never shown before. The tour continues in the House of the Larian, where the story of Pompeii’s last hours is intertwined with the discovery of rooms “crystallized” by the eruption, which immortalized the last moments of the city. Here, thanks to the park’s experts, Angela illustrates the technique of casts, which made it possible to reveal the dramatic images of the victims at the moment of their end.

The exploration continues in the House of Leda, one of the richest domus finds of this excavation campaign, with new revelations and frescoed walls of extraordinary beauty, particularly well preserved in their original colors. Finally, the tour concludes with two authentic wonders of Pompeii: the House of the Gilded Cup ids and the House of the Vettii, recently reopened to the public after a lengthy restoration. Here, the magnificence of the frescoes and columned gardens reveals the opulence of the inhabitants of one of the wealthiest areas of the city. Wrapped in “Pompeian red,” the viewer will have the impression of attending one of the sumptuous banquets described by Petronius.
