The Sky Over Berlin, Wim Wenders’ masterpiece, returns to theaters from Oct. 2 in a restored version. Made in 1987 and winner in the same year of the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, the celebrated film has been restored by the Wim Wenders Foundation and arrives in Italian cinemas thanks to the collaboration between the Cineteca di Bologna, with its project for the distribution of restored classics Il Cinema Ritrovato al cinema, and CG Entertainment, the new distributor for Italy of the German director’s library of films.
The partnership was born last June in Bologna on the occasion of the 37th edition of the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, where the director was among the leading guests.
In addition to Bruno Ganz and Solveig Dommartin, The Sky Above Berlin features the extraordinary participation of Peter Falk as a “movie star” (and himself) and that of Nick Cave, immortalized by Wenders together with his Bad Seeds. Testifying to Wenders’ strong passion for rock-and New Wave in particular-the film’s soundtrack also features tracks by Laurie Anderson, Tuxedomoon, Crime & The City Solution, Minimal Compact, Sprung aus den Wolken, and Laurent Petitgand.
The sky above Berlin is inhabited by angels. They share space, but not time or color, with humans. “The idea arose simultaneously from several sources,” Wenders recounted. “First from reading Rilke’s Duine Elegies. Then, some time back, from the paintings of Paul Klee. Also from Walter Benjamin’s Angel of History. Suddenly I also listened to a song by the Cure about fallen angels. I was also reflecting on how the worlds of the present and the past coexist in this city, overlapping, dual images in time and space, which were joined by memories of childhood, of angels as omnipresent and invisible observers.”
The release of Heaven Above Berlin is produced in collaboration with Goethe-Institut.
