OnApril 8, 1973, in Mougins , France,Pablo Picasso died . Born in Malaga in 1881, at the age of 23 the artist moved to Paris to devote himself totally to art and to chase a dream that came true in 1907, when the painting Les demoiselles d’Avignon, now considered the founding work of the Cubist revolution, forever disrupted the history of painting and opened the doors of the world’s major galleries for him, from Berlin to New York. In a 20th century marked by wars, his brushes gave life to works such as Guernica and the Portrait of Dora Maar and consecrated his entry into the Olympus of European and international painting, making him one of the most important artists of his generation.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death, ARTE engaged some of the most prominent international artists by asking them to share their perceptions on the collective and individual legacy of the legendary creator of Guernica. Their stories have been collected in Picasso as Seen by..., a collection of 14 episodes in which, in just a few minutes, figures such as Serbian performance-artist Marina Abramovic, British violinist Daniel Hope and American neo-pop icon Jeff Koons share their views on the Spanish painter.
Involved in the Spanish Civil War, threatened by Nazi occupiers, glorified at the Liberation, starring during the Cold War: is the aura Picasso enjoys really in tune with reality? Without denying his genius, in Picasso without Legend, director Manuelle Blanc questions the heroic figure of the artist and analyzes it through the sieve of reality, historical facts and concrete actions for the Resistance. Enriched by archival documents and expert insights, the documentary highlights the weaknesses, contradictions and ambiguities of the man who remains, half a century after his death, an undisputed icon of modern art.
While around Picasso’s work everything seems already said and already seen, dance appears as an unexplored language to narrate the master of cubism and his way of seeing reality. The Picasso Dance performance series explores the many facets of the painter and the correlations between the artist and movement, a concept also often expressed in his paintings. Under the inventive gaze of directors Valérie Müller and Thibaut Charlut, eight choreographers liberate themselves from the stage and take the work around the world and to the most unusual locations: from the Parisian catacombs to Madrid’s Crystal Palace, via Senegal, where choreographer Nora Chipaumire stages Les Demoiselles d’Avignon for the first time.
Picasso’s “The Bridesmaids of Avignon” - ARTJACKING!
For his works, Picasso was inspired by everything around him: brothels, African masks, food and human bodies. All this also returns in Les demoiselles d’Avignon, considered by many to be the magnum opus of the Spanish master of Cubism. What did subsequent generations of artists take from it? Lee Krasner intensified the dynamism, Robert Colescott questioned the African borrowings, and Patrick Caulfield decided to emancipate the women in the painting. Recounting the results of these reinterpretations is the episode “The Bridesmaids of Avignon” - Picasso of the series ARTJACKING!!!
