Mauro Bigonzetti’s ballet Caravaggio, starring étoile Roberto Bolle, promoter of the project and star of the show precisely as Caravaggio, lands in Italy. The show, which debuted in 2008 with the Staatsballett Berlin, will be staged at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino from May 9 to 11, as part of the 87th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival, and then at the TAM Teatro Arcimboldi in Milan from May 15 to 21.
The ballet Caravaggio represents an important all-Italian production, desired and interpreted by Roberto Bolle, an ambassador of dance in the world and promoter of an art accessible to all. Alongside him, a cast of international soloists and a corps de ballet of about 30 young dancers, selected through auditions.
Created by choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti, a leading figure on the contemporary scene, Caravaggio finds its evocative power in Bruno Moretti’s score. The composer orchestrated Claudio Monteverdi’s excerpts from operas such as L’Orfeo, Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and L’incoronazione di Poppea into a symphonic key.
The work draws inspiration from the life and works of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (Milan, 1571 - Porto Ercole, 1610), and chronicles the intense complexity of his figure. Bigonzetti explores the artist’s inner torment and creative genius, weaving the two into a psychological and dramatic ballet.
The dramaturgical structure alternates solos, duets, trios and quartets, interrupted by choral scenes that impart movement to the narrative. The choreography reveals a deep “Caravaggesque self,” capable of conveying both the shadows of the painter’s restless soul and the light that emerges from his artistic production. The scenographic minimalism of Carlo Cerri, who also signs the lighting design, emphasizes the contrasts between light and shadow, enhancing the link between the choreographic thought and the dancers’ physicality.
The ballet, enthusiastically received by international critics since its debut in Germany in 2008, finally arrives in Italy thanks to the collaboration between the Fondazione Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and ARTEDANZASRL, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Intesa Sanpaolo.
Caravaggio thus represents a journey into the art and life of a genius, a work capable of combining dance, music and theater in an original synthesis. Roberto Bolle, with his talent and charisma, promises to make this debut a unique event. For the Florence stage, tickets are available at the theater box office or on the official website: www.maggiofiorentino.com.
