Rai 5,Art Night restarts: a journey through art, love and madness. It begins with Camille Claudel

Starting Jan. 8, the cultural series Art Night, hosted by Neri Marcorè, restarts on Rai 5. First appointment with the documentary on Camille Claudel, genius of sculpture, between torments and artistic claims.

Starting again on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 9:15 p.m. on Rai 5, the popular cultural series Art Night, hosted by Neri Marcorè. This year the program promises to take viewers on a journey through the lives of extraordinary artists, exploring the link between art, love and madness.

The first event of the season is dedicated to Camille Claudel, a brilliant French sculptor often remembered more for her tormented relationship with Auguste Rodin than for her extraordinary works. Thanks to the documentary “Camille Claudel. Sculpting to Exist” by Sandra Paugam, the program restores the sculptor to her rightful place in the international art scene, highlighting the power of her art as a tool for personal emancipation.

The story of Camille Claudel: passion, struggle and genius

Camille Claudel, who was called “the most brilliant woman of her time,” was born into a family far removed from the artistic world, but already at the age of twelve she revealed an overwhelming passion for sculpture. At seventeen she moved to Paris, where she joined Auguste Rodin’s atelier. A complex and turbulent relationship developed between the two: Rodin recognized her talent, but tried to relegate Camille to the role of muse and collaborator, belittling her attempts to establish herself as an independent sculptor.

Despite the prejudices of the time and the difficulties of being a woman in a male-dominated environment, Camille continued to create works of extraordinary emotional intensity. These include the famous Waltz, where her inner torments and her struggle for artistic independence find form.

Her story ended tragically: after years of isolation, she spent the last 30 years of her life in a psychiatric hospital, preferring that condition rather than betray her vocation.
