Launching on Oct. 28, premiering on Sky Arte at 9:15 p.m., the new Sky Original series dedicated to the great masters of painting. Titled Great Masters, the series chronicles the lives of great painters through their masterpieces in eight episodes lasting 30 minutes each, also available on demand and streaming on NOW. Andrea Ward ’s voice will accompany viewers on their discovery of the great artists, joined by interviews with some of Italy’s leading scholars and art historians.
The first episode, on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 9:15 p.m., will be dedicated to Masaccio, innovator, revolutionary and modern. Thanks to his pictorial innovations that bring us back to Novecento existentialism, Masaccio appears to us as a contemporary. In 15th-century Florence, among Renaissance fathers such as Brunelleschi and Donatello, Masaccio embodied the new spirit of the age. The painter died very young, at only 26, but he changed the history of Western painting. The 9:50 p.m. episode will be devoted to Pontormo, an eccentric figure also evidenced by his diaries.
Subsequent episodes will be devoted to Giovanni Bellini (Nov. 4 at 9:15 p.m.), Duccio di Buoninsegna (Nov. 11 at 9:15 p.m.), Correggio (Nov. 18 at 9:15 p.m.), Luca Signorelli (Nov. 25 at 9:15 p.m.), Andrea Mantegna (Dec. 2 at 9:15 p.m.) and Carpaccio (Dec. 9 at 9:15 p.m.).
