On Sunday, Jan. 3 at 9:15 p.m., the film dedicated to Paul Gauguin, specifically the artist’s last years, will air on Sky Arte and streamed on Now Tv.
Playing the painter in the film Gauguin, this is the title, is Vincent Cassel; directed by Édouard Deluc, it is set in 1891 in Tahiti: in that year, in fact, Gauguin left France to come to Tahiti, in search of new stimuli to paint. Here he met Téhura, a local youth who became his muse.
The film stems from the illustrated short story Noa Noa: The Tahiti Journal of Paul Gaguin, as the director points out, "The film stems from my discovery of Noa Noa, the illustrated story Gauguin produced during his first stay in Tahiti from 1891 to 1893. It is a literary work of great poetry, a tale of adventure with a touch of breathtaking romance. It is a kind of private diary, written with great humanity, about his Tahitian experiences, in which he combines stories, impressions, thoughts, political issues, artistic issues, sketches and watercolors. It is a kind of sumptuous declaration of love for Tahiti, Tahitians and his Tahitian Eve. In 2012 I returned to “Noa Noa,” then to all Gauguin’s other writings and correspondence with his wife and friends. From all that material emerged the profile of a visionary and inspiring character, who embraced modernity by constantly questioning it."
Vincent Cassel, telling about Gauguin, pointed out, “He sacrificed his family, his health and his career on the altar of his art. He exhausted himself in pursuit of what he called ’primitive’ or ’savage.’ He got on the wrong side of everyone, including the Tahitian community in which he would have liked to live but which rejected him like an antibody. He was simultaneously seen as a monster and an unusual character. Yet his canvases and his contrasting, vibrant palette reproduce something deeply alive but without relying on realism, and they have passed on to posterity. I portrayed him without judgment, even though he did things I would not have done. He got burned. But he couldn’t have done otherwise.”
In addition to Cassel, the film stars Tuheï Adams, Malik Zidi, Pua-Taï Hikutini, and Pernille Bergendorff.
