On the occasion of the 410th anniversary of Caravaggio’s death, laF will broadcast the docu-film Dentro Caravaggio on Saturday, July 18 at 9:10 p.m. in its TV premiere to trace the life of the famous artist. Leading this never-before-seen journey into one of the most tormented figures in art history will be actor and writer Sandro Lombardi, who will recount the places of the painter’s existence and the secrets of his complex personality through experts and unpublished testimonies.
The film is signed by Francesco Fei and will take viewers between Milan, Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily. Starting from Milan’s Palazzo Reale and the exhibition of the same name, which for the first time placed Merisi’s works side by side with their respective X-ray images, Lombardi will touch on all the main places where a concrete trace of the artist has remained, from the Pinacoteca di Brera with the Supper at Emmaus to the Cerasi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo with the Crucifixion of St. Peter and the Conversion of Saul, to Pio Monte della Misericordia in Naples and the Fontanelle Cemetery. From the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Valletta to the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia in Sicily, where some of the most intense and somber works of Caravaggio’s artistic journey can be seen: the Burial of St. Lucy, in Syracuse, the Resurrection of Lazarus and theAdoration of the Magi in Messina. The docu-film will then lead to the Sacro Monte of Varallo, a devotional complex characterized by the theatrical and scenic representation of the Way of the Cross and the places of Christ’s story. The itinerary also features a foray into the exhibition The Last Caravaggio. Heirs and New Masters, to recount Caravaggio’s influence on seventeenth-century art.
Several experts will accompany Lombardi in this documentary: Rossella Vodret, curator of the exhibition Dentro Caravaggio; Marco Carminati; Alessandro Morandotti, curator of the exhibition L’ultimo Caravaggio; Milo Manara; Gennaro Carillo; Giovanna Cassese; Caterina Di Giacomo; Achille Mauri; Elisabetta Mauri; and the video artist duo Masbedo. Sandro Lombardi will address with them themes related to the artist and his contemporaneity, such as faith and light, noir, reality and escape.
The docu-film is also available on demand on Sky.
