Tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 9:15 p.m. in a premiere on Rai 5, Art Night will show Hopper, the blank canvas, a film dedicated to Edward Hopper, the artist of American realism who knew how to portray in his works the loneliness of theAmerican way of life.
Coming from a tradition rooted in a realism intrinsic to American culture and nurtured by the practice of illustration, Hopper proves to be the most paradoxical of realist painters. Making a film about Hopper is therefore a challenge, as narrative and sentiment in his works are closely linked. A challenge taken up by Didier Ottinger and Jean-Pierre Devillers authors of the documentary, produced by Arte France, La Réunion des Musées nationaux and Cnc. A film that aims to make the audience experience the same emotions, focusing on viewing the works, without superfluous distractions, and leading from the paintings to the places of Hopper’s life: from his studio in New York to his studio in Truro, from Nyack to Paris.
Based on rare footage of Hopper and the collection of documents, notebooks, and photos donated by his wife Jo to the Whitney Museum, the documentary can count on the testimony of Brian O’Doherty, a longtime friend of the couple, as well as valuable footage.
