Nexo Digital ’s new season of Great Art at the Movies kicks off in January , which this year will offer a journey from the ancient Egyptians to the lonely landscapes of Edward Hopper, passing through the golds of Klimt.
The season will open Jan. 30 and 31 with Klimt’s The Kiss, the docufilm directed by Ali Ray that investigates the history, sensuality, dazzling materials and mysteries of one of the world’s most evocative, well-known and reproduced paintings. Painted in Vienna around 1908, the work is one of the masterpieces of Klimt, a controversial artist who dominated the art scene of his time. Born in Baumgarten, then a suburb of Vienna, to a goldsmith father and an opera-loving mother, Gustav Klimt, the leader of the Viennese Secession, was an artist capable of creating new decadent worlds that fused sensuality and ancient mythology with radical modernity. Many of his paintings feature the beauty and mystery of the female body, and his “golden period” in particular is characterized by a unique working method that allowed him to apply very thin natural gold leaf to the canvas. It is from this refined technique that some of his most famous works were born, including the timeless symbol of beauty and artistic expression, the celebrated Kiss. The film delves right into the details of gold, decorative designs, symbolism and eroticism and also asks: how did The Kiss become so famous? Turn into, among other things, a pop icon and the most popular poster hanging on student dormitory walls from Beijing to Boston? A close study of the painting will take us through the streets of extraordinary turn-of-the-century Vienna, when a new world collided with the old and modernity saw, for the first time, the light. The docufilm is produced by Phil Grabsky with Exhibition on Screen.
The second event will be March 12 and 13 with Men and Gods. The Wonders of the Egyptian Museum, produced by 3D Productions, Nexo Digital and Sky in collaboration with the Egyptian Museum in the bicentennial year of its founding. Directed by Michele Mally, who signs the subject with Matteo Moneta, author of the screenplay, the film features the extraordinary participation of Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, who guides viewers on a journey to discover the treasures of one of the most fascinating civilizations in ancient history. With more than one million visitors in 2023, the Egyptian Museum is the fifth most visited museum in Italy and the oldest in the world dedicated to the ancient Egyptian civilization. Forty thousand artifacts are housed in Turin, 12,000 of which are displayed on 4 floors of the museum. Sphinxes, colossal statues, tiny amulets, sarcophagi tell nearly 4,000 years of ancient history. Among the world-famous exhibits are the Papyrus of Kings, known abroad as the Turin King List, the only list that has come down to us that reconstructs the succession of pharaohs, handwritten on papyrus, or the Papyrus of Mines, one of the oldest known maps. There are also sculptures such as the statue of the priest Anen, that of Ramesses II, that of the so-called Isis of Coptic, as well as the rich grave goods of Kha, superintendent of the construction of the pharaohs’ tombs who, together with his wife Merit, will be among the protagonists of the entire narrative. Finds, scientific studies, and the behind-the-scenes of the Museum are narrated not only by President Evelina Christillin and Director Christian Greco, but also by some of the Museum’s curators and numerous other international experts.
The season will close on April 9 and 10 with Hopper. An American Love Story, dedicated to one of the symbols of American art. Edward Hopper ’s is a popular, silent and mysterious America, capable of influencing painters such as Rothko and Banksy, filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch, as well as photographers and musicians. But who was this thoughtful artist and master storyteller really? And how did a struggling illustrator born in upstate New York create such a wealth of masterpieces that can speak to ordinary people as well as experts? The documentary, directed by Phil Grabsky, takes an in-depth look at Hopper’s art, life and personal relationships, from his beginnings to his relationship with his wife Jo, who abandoned his promising art career to be his manager. And again the success of his canvases, the enigmatic personality behind the paintbrush, the ability to investigate loneliness as no one before him had been able to do, so much so that, decades later, he even dialogues with those who, in the Covid period, found themselves reclusive, alone, isolated. With the help of expert interviews and diary readings and thanks to a surprising glimpse thrown at his everyday life, Hopper. An American Love Story reconstructs the artist’s story and, as the title states, intends to draw the audience inside an all-American love story: his love for architecture and the open and sometimes desolate landscapes of the States but also his tender and passionate love for his determined life partner Jo. Produced by Phil Grabsky with Exhibition on Screen.
