“I feel a bit like an alter ego of Modigliani, I put a lot of my own stuff into this character and I wrote and rewrote the script many times. Just like him I then hit rock bottom many times, but then I always found a little door that saved me,” said Johnny Depp, who signs the direction of Modì - Three Days on the Wings of Madness, a biopic inspired by the life of Amedeo Modigliani, played by Riccardo Scamarcio.
Twenty-five years after his first film as a director(The Brave, in 1997), Johnny Depp is indeed back behind the camera to tell the story of the seventy-two most turbulent hours in the life of the artist from Livorno during his stay in Paris in 1916: fleeing from the police through the streets and bars of war-torn Paris. His desire to prematurely end his career and leave the city will be rebuffed by fellow bohemians: the French artist Maurice Utrillo (played by Bruno Gouery), the Belarusian Chaim Soutine (Ryan McParlande) and his English muse and lover, Beatrice Hastings (Antonia Desplat). Modigliani will seek advice from art dealer and friend Leopold Zborowski (Stephen Graham), but he will be confronted by international art collector Gangnat (played by Al Pacino) who could change his life. Also in the cast is Luisa Ranieri as cook and model Rosalia Tobia.
The film is based on a play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for the big screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski.
“This Modigliani,” said Scamarcio, “is really an alter ego of Johnny Depp. He is a dynamic anarchic and light character, but he also has a certain purity. In short, a character that I must say also looks a little like me.”
Modì - Three Days on the Wings of Madness was presented in recent days at the Rome Film Festival, where part of the cast was present. Johnny Depp also received the Lifetime Achievement Award on this occasion.
