On the occasion of International Dance Day, Viva la danza, an event show commissioned by RAI and the Ministry of Culture and created by Roberto Bolle to celebrate the art of dance in Italy, airs tonight in prime time on Rai 1. Produced by Rai Direzione Intrattenimento in collaboration with Ballandi and Artedanza srl, the program will be a grand celebration of all genres of dance, a gala made at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, among the largest theaters in the world. From the Gala are borrowed the great performers: some of the stars of the international dance world, from Melissa Hamilton to Daniil Simkin, from Étoile of the Teatro alla Scala Nicoletta Manni to Tatiana Melnik, from Timofej Andrijashenko to Virna Toppi, Toon Lobach, Fumi Kaneko continuing with the young Italian talent in force at the Royal Ballet of London, Marco Masciari, to William Bracewell to Aterballetto, the MM Contemporary Dance Company and the students of the Scuola di Ballo dell’Accademia Teatro alla Scala. However, there will not only be ballet, but many genres will be represented: every kind of dance, from hip hop to swing, from Latin American to tap, in every corner of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

The narrative is then enriched by several interwoven narrative strands: there is the backstage, where not only do we run into the artists just before the performance, but where tales and stories about dance and life are also woven together with the mechanisms and “inhabitants” of the theater, creating a small magical world with its own rules. To the frontal gaze of television is added the more intimate and at the same time lively one of the eye of a camera filming a documentary, committed to capturing the spirit of dance in its highest expression.

Roberto Bolle has thus involved not only great dancers, but also artists from the worlds of music, film and television, to whom he has entrusted crucial parts of the narrative. Also performing on stage will be the young members of the Coro delle Voci Bianche del Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, whose singing is accompanied by original choreography conceived by Roberto Bolle together with composer and violinist Alessandro Quarta.

Another valuable component of this unprecedented performance is the original theme song, both in music and staging. The music was specially created by Taketo Gohara for the program, with the title We are dancers at Heart (Taketo Gohara/Mirko Maria Matera/Stefano Nanni/Niccolò Fornabaio). Performed by Les Pointes, it is a pop song that immediately turns into an invitation to everyone to join the dance party. On the notes of this song, we will see images of Roberto Bolle dancing on the roof of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino together with young people from the dance schools of Naples, gathered in Castel Sant’Elmo with a view of the gulf, and those from the schools of Milan performing on the highest part of the Duomo, an event made possible thanks to the collaboration with the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo.

Once again this year, the audience in the auditorium will consist mostly of young students from dance schools throughout Italy, brought together with the collaboration of AssoDanza Italia, the main association that protects and represents dance schools, teachers and those working in the performing arts sector who identify with Basic Choreographic Training.
A special evening to celebrate one of the most beloved arts in our country and one that has its roots right here.
