Starting Monday, May 24, a new series entirely dedicated to female photographers kicks off on Sky Arte. Le Fotografe, this is the title, is the first docu-series focusing on Italian female photographers and their point of view. The protagonists are Guia Besana, Ilaria Magliocchetti Lombi, Sara Lorusso, Carolina Amoretti, Maria Clara Macrì, Roselena Ramistella, Zoe Natale Mannella, and Simona Ghizzoni.
Created and directed by Francesco G. Raganato and produced by Terratrema Film in collaboration with Seriously, the series features eight Italian female photographers who deal with female-related themes. In fact, they do not only deal with strictly female themes, but intend to unveil complex worlds in which each one pursues her research, grows in her work, affirms her presence in the context of visual culture, and contributes to change and enrich the Italian photographic imaginary. Each episode will be dedicated to a female photographer, her original point of view and a specific theme, from love to sexuality, from the role of women in society to body positivity, united by the conception of photography as a tool for investigation, storytelling and artistic expression.
Le Fotografe intends to offer itself as an anthological series, but not a retrospective one: in each episode, the protagonists are portrayed in the act of creating something original, with an eye always turned to the present and the future. Some of them take the last photo of a years-long project, others begin a new one, all of them, in the course of shooting, have produced photographs that will enrich their portfolios. At the beginning of a career, growing or already established, these eight professionals bring their specificities, human and professional, to the screen.
Guia Besana showcases situations and problems of contemporary women; Ilaria Magliocchetti Lombi, rock photographer of Italian and international music greats, recounts the role of women in society; the very young portrait photographer Sara Lorusso tells the story of her generation, in search of a place in the world; Carolina Amoretti created Fantagirl, a community of women promoting body positivity; Maria Clara Macrì with portraits to girls from halfway around the world set in their rooms, promotes the importance of independence and self-determination; Roselena Ramistella recounts the power of the women of her island, Sicily; young fashion photographer Zoe Natale Mannella portrays the friendship and intimacy between girls of her generation; Simona Ghizzoni uses self-portraiture to tell with a delicate gaze, difficult issues such as eating disorders or violence against women.
The series is also available on demand and streaming on NOW.
