An animated series written and directed by Zerocalcare is coming to Netflix

An animated series signed by Zerocalcare, aka Michele Rech, one of Italy’s best-known cartoonists, is coming to Netflix. The series, written and directed by him, will be titled Tear Along the Edges and will be produced by Movimenti Production in collaboration with BAO Publishing: this is Zerocalcare’s first animated series but it will not be a first for his fans because the protagonists will be the now well-known characters of his imagination (i.e. his alter ego, his friend Cinghiale, Secco, Sarah, and the Armadillo, with the latter having the voice of Valerio Mastandrea).

Zerocalcare gave notice of the series launch with a Facebook post, in which he showed a preview of about a minute. “It’s a story that is very close to my heart, and I’m doing it the way I want to do it,” he said, in Romanesque as in all his posts. “In the languages, in the content, in the writing, it’s my stuff, which means that if it comes na shit I’ll take it on. At the same time, as you can already see starting from these 50 seconds, this thing is made much better than what is within my possibilities: this is because a lot of people are working on it who are the ones who then make the difference between what I’m doing on my own and what we’re doing here.”

“I had been around animation for a long time, even having a lot of fun experimenting, doing everything on my own,” the Rebibbia cartoonist later explained in a note. “At the same time, I would have liked to raise the bar, to take more advantage of the video medium in terms of directing, in terms of movement, while still maintaining my language and themes and continuing to have total control over the story. In this sense Netflix has put me in a position to work in a way that holds all the planes together: absolute freedom in content and languages, the possibility to collaborate with people more capable than me, to tell a story on a platform that is now accessible to practically everyone. Hopefully by the time the series comes out the world will still exist more or less as we know it.”

A launch date for the series has not yet been announced at this time.
